Maddy Ginsburg has The Sweet Touch #Recipe #Vegan

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with No comments

My second contemporary romance for Soul Mate Publishing is titled “The SweetTouch”. The heroine, Kate Bromley, is a nutritionist and advocate for a mostly raw food diet. She teaches nutrition and gardening to elementary-age children and has private cooking lessons for adults at her home. At the close of each of the thirty-two chapters, there is a healthy vegetarian recipe.
I spent a year testing and tasting different recipes in my kitchen before selecting the ones I liked. The recipe usually references the storyline. Either Kate is demonstrating that particular dish or the hero, Dan Brookhouse, owner of a chain of steak and rib restaurants, is experimenting with new dishes to put on the menu for his customers.
From desserts and appetizers to salads, smoothies and main dishes, there’s something for everyone. One that has become my family’s favorite is a mock tuna salad made with chick peas and toasted walnuts plus other tasty items. The recipe in chapter one – chocolate pudding – is made with raw ingredients such as avocados, bananas, cacao powder, maple syrup and vanilla flavoring.  Later in the book the reader will find a chocolate mousse containing coconut milk. Dan is a chocoholic so chocolate is heavily featured. “The Sweet Touch” was released as an e-book on September 18 and will be in print three to four months afterwards. Available at Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Enjoy.

Blurb

After an early disastrous marriage, Kate Bromley is determined to obtain an education and pursue a career as a nutritionist. Platonic friendships are fine but never again will she depend on a man for her happiness. She’s content with her life as it is.
Single dad Dan Brookhouse owns a chain of restaurants featuring steaks and ribs. When he unexpectedly meets Kate at a demonstration she’s giving of raw food desserts, he feels an immediate attraction to her. When he tastes her chocolate pudding made with avocadoes and bananas, he’s determined to have her demonstrate for his chefs.
Kate doesn’t mind a business relationship with Dan but somehow that idea is nipped in the bud when she succumbs to their first kiss. Annoyed that she feels a magnetic pull to Dan, she gives him her “I don’t date” speech and insists she’s never swerved from her vow to stay uninvolved. Dan laughs at her proclamation and is determined to convince her she can still have her freedom as well as a relationship with him.
Can these two strong-minded people find happiness together?

Here’s an excerpt from the book:

Dan was pretty sure of himself, she thought uneasily. He was talking about their next encounter while she had no intention of seeing him again, at least in a personal way. “Dan,” she began hesitantly, “I should probably mention that I don’t date. I wouldn’t mind a platonic friendship, but anything more is not possible. I’m much too busy for any kind of involvement.” She sent him a glance and, when he didn’t reply right away, she added, “This isn’t a recent decision. After my divorce I decided to put all my energy into my own life, finishing my education and building a business. I’ve never allowed myself to swerve from that course. I hope you understand.” He suddenly started laughing. Shocked at his unexpected response, Kate turned toward him with a puzzled stare. “What’s so funny?” she demanded.
“You,” he managed to say in a choked voice. “You sound so definite.” He pulled into the parking lot of the Brookhouse restaurant, turned off the ignition and looked at her, his blue eyes twinkling. “I’ll just have to convince you to swerve a little now and then, like our brief time in the greenhouse.” He reached out a hand to run a finger down the side of her flushed face. “That was just an introduction, mind you. I’m sure we’ll find more in common than you could imagine.” His tone was tender as he said this.
She glared at him. “You are incorrigible. Did anyone ever tell you that?”
He nodded solemnly. “I’m sure someone has, but I can’t remember.” Then he spoiled it all by laughing again. He left the car to open her door. “Let’s concentrate on this presentation. Then we’ll talk about other things.”
When he helped her out he brought her close for a light kiss. His arms tightened around her for a few moments while he gazed into those melting brown eyes. “You have the most extraordinary eyes,” he murmured. “But then you know that.”
She was confused. She felt both comfortable and uneasy wrapped in Dan’s strong embrace. Part of her wanted to stay there and forget she’d made strong resolutions for her life. The other part told her to push him away before he could get a toehold and sink all her aspirations. Frozen between these opposing poles, she couldn’t come to a conclusion. The mousy outfit she’d decided to wear that day did absolutely nothing to diminish his interest, she thought with an inward sigh. What could she do that would turn him off?

This sounds like great fun. I was charmed by Maddy's first book, A Total Mismatch which is currently 1.75 on Kindle.

Here's the link to The Sweet Touch.

Chocolate Pudding
1 medium-size ripe avocado, peeled and cut into small pieces
1 ripe peeled banana
1 tablespoon cacao (find this ingredient in health food stores)
1 tablespoon maple syrup (honey or agave will work also)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Using a blender, combine all ingredients and blend until smooth. Makes enough for two small portions.

When Maddy sent me this recipe I had to try it. I have many vegan friends and I am always looking for new and delicious ways to feed. them. Note: be sure the banana is really ripe. I also added a teaspoon of almond extract. The result was delicious. Happy reading and Happy eating.  Happy reading.

Irish Magic Cover help #giveaway. #recipe

Posted by Susan B James on 9:32:00 PM with 3 comments

Aye and Begorrah and may the Luck of the Irish be with you.
Somewhere inside, there is a little bit of Irish in most of us. Probably put there by Leprechaun dust. Leprechauns are another tribe of the Faerie Folk that live is a shifting fold of time. Are they alive now? Well it depends on how time folds. It’s always possible to catch a glimpse of one.
In 2013 I went to Ireland to celebrate my seventieth birthday. I wanted to see a Leprechaun; hear musical Irish voices, meet the people and visit the Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival.
I didn’t find a real matchmaker, but I did find a pot of gold: An idea for a book, Kate's hero - now called Irish Magic will be published in August and I need cover ideas.
I put a post on my Facebook Author Page with possible cover images.

I forgot to add this cover which also has a good feel to it.
Anyone who helps me out with a comment will get an ARC of Irish Magic.
Two commenters will win a ten dollar Amazon Card.

Blurb:
Kate Carnahan’s second novel is late to her publisher because the bitter end to her engagement turned her hero into a snarky disaster and she’s had no luck in re-imagining him. When she finds her first- ever four-leaf clover, her wish is a new hero for her book.
Hah! Every leprechaun knows a four-leaf clover wish is a heart wish and Kate’s heart wants a true love. To fulfill it, half-Leprechaun Bradley Flynn calls in help from the finest matchmaker Ireland’s ever had.
Essie O’Callaghan retired her hereditary position years ago, but she now has a mission of her own. Finding her friend Dr. Michael Walshe a wife.
Together Brad and Essie engineer Kate’s and Michael’s trips to Ireland, arranging for them to encounter each other – over, and over and over again.
Kate and Michael have both sworn off romantic entanglements, but the more they see of each other, the harder it is to resist the temptation to explore their reluctant attraction.

And then there’s the matter of Brad’s cousin Eamon, ashamed of his halfling heritage and too stiff-necked to admit he’s been in love with his fellow halfling Pirikit Mac Cionaoith his whole life. Someone has to take that pair in hand.

Ah well, Ireland’s home to more magic than most mortals dream. It’s a fine place for two stubborn couples who are perfect for each other to fall in love.

Recipe time.

For St. Patrick’s Day, I buy corned beef, spread the spice packet on top, wrap in in heavy aluminum foil and bake it at 250 degrees for five or six hours.

I serve it with cabbage, pan sautéed with Irish butter. And on the side, Sour Cream Horseradish sauce. Because everything is better with sour cream, Even dirt.

Sour Cream Horseradish Sauce Recipe:
Ingredients:

1/4 to 1/2 cup prepared horseradish (according to your taste)
1 pint (2 cups) sour cream
2 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice
1 teaspoon salt

Preparation:
In a medium-sized bowl, combine horseradish, sour cream, lemon juice, and salt; thoroughly mix. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Other Book News

I signed a contract with Soul Mate Publishing for Irish Magic. It will come out sometime in 2019.
The Spanish Edition of  Mom, is There a Santa Claus? , ¿Mamá,
existe Santa Claus? is now available in paperback from Barnes and Noble or Amazon.
I think K.C. Snider's illustrations are perfect in any language.
Mom, is There a Santa Claus? is also available for Kindle for 5.00
Maybe This Time continues to collect reviews. Here's one:

Maybe This Time
Two things about this book that are delicious: the idea of having a second chance with the love of your life AND the fact that the main character gets that chance in middle age.
If you like romance stories but wish they weren’t all about young adults or 30-somethings, this is the book for you. Ms. James does an excellent job of presenting the scrumptious possibility that maybe, just maybe we don’t have to live with the mistakes we made the first time around.
Read it for the time travel, the spot-on era descriptions that take you back to a simpler age, and most of all for the romance.
A page-turner for all those—and more reasons.
The Audio Book narrated by the brilliant Stephanie Bentley has also gotten very positive reviews. You can download it for free with an Audible trial. Listen to a sample. https://smile.amazon.com/Maybe-This-Time-Second-Romance/dp/B079SHZWQ8/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_
The cover is one of my errors. It's not the illustrator's fault. I was trying to brand it to Time and Forever. But I think the story might have been better served with a different cover. I have no idea how to make that happen.
Acting News
I continue to get acting roles which makes me very happy. This week I filmed a role on the ABC comedy, Splitting Up Together. Next year I am in two new movies.
Two weeks ago I was on the TBS series The Guest Book playing Michael Rappaport's mom. Followed by a quick one-liner on CBS's wonderful 12-step comedy series, Mom. I love both these shows. I Just wish they'd shown the tattoos they put on my character more clearly
I wish you the happiest of holidays. I am for holding down the stress quotient and upping the thankfulness part. Enter the contest. Find a good book.

Linda Bradley's New Christmas Novella #Giveaway & #Recipe

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 6 comments
Linda Bradley has three novels in her Maggie series, all published by Soul Mate Publishing. I found this series to be a delightful read. So did many other readers. Maggie's Way has 202 reviews on Amazon. But for the fourth book, her Christmas novella, A Montana Bound Christmas, she took a different path. I asked Linda to blog about why.
Linda is giving away an eBook copy of A Montana Bound Christmas. And be sure to check out her treasured recipe for Sugar Cookies below.

Self-publishing began as a fleeting thought. I was ready to start a new series related to my Montana Bound Series and then, readers began requesting a Christmas story for Maggie Abernathy and Chloe McIntyre. The notion was one I hadn’t entertained until I saw the disappointed faces of some followers I met at a signing. That’s when I had a serious conversation with myself and began weighing what this adventure would mean in my world.
·        Self-publishing would be outside my comfort zone.
·        Writing a novella was something I hadn’t done before.
·        Writing a Christmas themed story wasn’t on my to-do list.

I noodled the idea and found myself going back to the idea of a Christmas novella and self-publishing. Self-publishing this project appealed to me because my readers were looking for Montana Bound Christmas project this season. If I tackled the project myself, I could deliver.

With that said, I decided to venture off in a new direction. As I made the commitment to finish this project I kept this in mind.
·        Self-publishing would allow me to understand the process of publishing a book on a different level.
·        Readers wanted a Christmas story and I didn’t want to let them down.
·        Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Therefore, A Montana Bound Christmas was born. It was a seed planted by the readers and when they planted the seed of what they wanted to grow in their reading gardens, it opened new doors for me. This process was more than just a learning experience.
·        Self-publishing allowed me to act on what I was thinking instinctually.
·        Self-publishing allowed me to release a book on my timetable.
·        Self-publishing allowed me to use my creativity in a way that fulfilled a curiosity.
·        Creating the cover allowed me to utilize my art background that gets pushed aside sometimes in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I really love the cover. Great job.
·        Most of all, self-publishing gave the opportunity to connect with my community of writers on a deeper level.
A Montana Bound Christmas
ho, ho, home for the holidays!

Blurb:
Chloe and John McIntyre await Maggie Abernathy's arrival at the 617 Ranch, but snowfall has halted flights from Michigan to Montana. While Maggie and her mother prepare for a delayed departure, eight-year-old Chloe prepares for disappointment by inviting her Hollywood mother to the ranch in hopes of filling the void. Brook's unexpected acceptance raises the stakes for John who longs for the perfect Christmas. This cast of misfits bands together in true Montana Bound style when unexpected guests arrive and a curious dog goes missing.

Excerpt:
CHAPTER 1
John
DAD, WHENS MAGGIE going to get here?” Chloe’s breath fogged up the picture window. Her gaze scanned the snowy Montana mountains. “I hope she makes it in time for
Christmas.”Ruffling Chloe’s dishwater-blond mane, I
prayed like hell Maggie and her mother, Glad, would get here soon. Traveling had come to a halt across the country thanks to the winter storm, but at least Maggie and Glad were safe at home and not sleeping on some airport floor like the many interviewed on the news.
Feeling anxious, I massaged my temples. Wrapping my arms around Maggie and kissing her lips were the only Christmas presents I needed.
“Not sure, Pumpkin. Depends on the flights.”
Crossing paths with Maggie the summer before last was like finding a rose bush on top of a mountain while searching for gold. As much as she resisted, her heart finally won. We all won. Acquiring Glad in the deal was a bonus. Without hesitation, she’d taken a special liking to Chloe. They’d bonded instantly through their love of mischief. Glad was like the grandmother Chloe never had, and her sense of humor cut to the quick. Glad wore her heart on her sleeve and was the only one capable of giving Maggie a run for her money when Maggie needed a challenge. Glad was Maggie’s mother first and foremost, but their relationship—built on sarcastic wit, middle- naming, and genuine love—was most unique.
“Maggie has to get here.” Chloe drew a heart in the moisture on the frosty glass pane. She wrote her initials above Maggie’s, then she added a plus sign. “The snow is so thick you can barely see through it.” Chloe hummed a holiday tune between thoughts. “Just think, Dad, next year at this time, I’ll be nine and Maggie will have been here a whole year.”
Nudging the hat back from my brow, I thought about the woman who’d stolen my heart. I never dreamed in a million years I’d fall head over heels for my Michigan neighbor lady, Maggie Abernathy. Living in Grosse Pointe hadn’t been on my agenda originally, but the picture was crystal clear why I’d established residency in the Great Lake State before coming back to Montana. If I didn’t believe in fate before, I did now, and I wanted Maggie to get here as much as Chloe. We had big plans of starting a life together and this was only the beginning.
“Why couldn’t Maggie and Glad come earlier?” When Chloe spoke, deep lines appeared along the bridge of her nose.
“I told you, Chloe, Maggie’s settling things with her house. Remember when we sold our house in Grosse Pointe? It takes time. Papers have to be signed, things need to be packed, and besides Maggie wanted to spend some extra time with her momma. You can understand that, right? When Christmas is over, Glad’ll fly home. I don’t think Maggie has ever really been apart from her momma.”
I lifted Chloe’s chin with my index finger. My daughter’s soul shimmered behind her green stare. Hope should’ve been Chloe’s middle name because my girl never gave up when the chips were down.
“Glad’s house is where Maggie grew up. Maggie’s saying her last goodbye.”
Chloe’s expression tugged at my heart like the snap of a lasso when wrangling a wild pony.
“I know what you mean. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten used to being apart from my momma, but maybe that’ll change someday. Hollywood sure is a far way away.”
Chloe’s momma was nothing like Maggie, and I wondered if I’d ever shed the guilt from our failed marriage that had left my daughter living with her old man. Chloe longed for a normal household, whatever that was in this day and age. Smiling at Chloe, I wished she’d see the well of hope I carried myself.
“I guess so, but I want Maggie to be here. It’s almost Christmas. We have so much to do.”
“I want Maggie here, too, Peanut, but it is what it is.” Resting my hands on Chloe’s thin shoulders, I prayed for the skies to clear so our Maggie’s arrival was sooner than later.
“Maggie promised she’d make cookies with me. Christmas will be here before you know it. This is our first Montana Christmas, and I want it to be perfect.” Chloe leaned her forehead against the window, closed her eyes then whispered in the sweetest of voices, “Please Lord, it’s me, Chloe. I know I can be kind of a pain, but can you please help Maggie and Glad get here, and fast?”
“Come here, Peanut.” Opening my arms, I scooped my little girl up. My cheek grazed hers. Nothing compared to her soft touch when pangs of disappointment bristled. On the outside, my daughter was as tough as they
come, but on the inside, she was soft and cuddly. Chloe rested her head against my shoulder, her warm breath like butterfly kisses upon my neck.
“Are you going to marry Maggie?”
“Without a doubt.” My heart pounded as I imagined sharing life with the woman I loved. “Don’t you worry.”
“Good,” Chloe whispered. “I can feel your heartbeat against mine. I think we both love her.”
“This is where Maggie needs to be, Peanut.” Holding my daughter tight, I breathed her in. She was a wee one, but something told me the years would pass in a blink of an eye if I wasn’t careful.
“I love you, Daddy.”“I love you, too, Munchkin.”Outside, heaping mounds of snow grew deeper with each passing hour. If Maggie and Glad couldn’t get to the 617 Ranch before Christmas morning this was going to be some Montana- bound holiday.

This sounds like an excellent get me-in-the-mood-for-Christmas Read. Thank you, Linda. And I believe you mentioned Sugar Cookies?
Christmas Recipe:
Sugar Cookies from Humpty Dumpty Magazine
This is a recipe near and dear to my heart. My mother made this recipe every year. It meant staying up past bedtime and baking with the woman I loved most. Fond memories of unwrapping sticks of butter, measuring sugar, sniffing the scent of vanilla, the sound of my mother’s wedding ring clanking against the yellow glass bowl as she mixed, and the anticipation of Santa on Christmas Eve haven’t faded even though the recipe card has. I passed on the tradition to my children and still make these cookies every year.

*I was unable to locate the Humpty-Dumpty Magazine issue this recipe came from. I believe it must be circa late 1950’s or early 1960’s. I did find my mother’s original recipe card with the page ripped from the magazine.
That is truly a treasured link to the past. Thank you for sharing.

Meet Madelyn Hill and her Scottish Historical Romance Highland Hope # Giveaway

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 4 comments
Please welcome Madelyn Hill whose new historical romance is now available. Highland Hope is the first book in her Wild Thistle Trilogy and Madelyn is doing a giveaway. Read on, my friends.
“Remember, lasses. Through Hope, Faith, and Honor, ye can rule,” were the last words Lady Hope MacAlister’s father spoke before dying. Those very words direct her every action and thought. Sword fighting and leading the men of her clan was second nature to Hope and she has little time for herself or any thoughts of love. Until Aidan MacKerry is captured spying on the clan.

She is beautiful, strong, and quick to pull a sword. But when he kisses her, all thoughts of the lairdship Aidan MacKerry seeks flee his mind. When the enemy continues to undermine Hope, Aidan is determined to aid her—only he didn’t think he’d lose his heart to the Laird of Wild Thistle Keep. When the enemy reveals Aidan’s secret, he must fight for his right to be laird and prove, despite their differences, he loves Hope.

The enemy refuses to back down and continues to threaten not only Hope, but the security of the entire clan. Only together will they be able to save the clan and save their love.

Madelyn, please tell us a little about yourself.
I’m an outgoing person who loves to talk and laugh. My husband and I like to cook, workout, and go to the movie theater. I have three children who are nearing adulthood and it is making me crazy as more gray hair pops out!

I love firsts, so tell me about the moment when a publisher told you they wanted to publish your book.
I had hesitated to submit my first novel Wolf’s Castle. I’m not sure why, but when my critique partner, author Misty Simon gently urged me (as in-just do it!) I submitted to Soul Mate Publishing. I was very excited and my family took me out to Hibachi, which is one of my favorite restaurants.

If it isn’t too nosy. How about the first time you kissed your true love?
Hmmm, it was love at first sight and the kiss sealed the deal! Once we kissed, we saw each other everyday.

Other than your own, who are your favorite (heroes/heroines/writers) in your genre?
I love anything Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte. I’d say Jane Erye is my all-time favorite characters. One of my favorite YA historical authors is Elizabeth George Speare and her novel The Witch of Blackbird Pond with the heroine Kit.

What is the most exciting moment, so far, in your writing career?
When my novel Wolf’s Castle made it to #1 in the Historical Romance category on Amazon. That is an awesome moment!

What is your favorite pastime, other than writing?
I love to cook. My husband and I watch a lot of Food Network and then run to the grocery store to make the recipe we just watched. I cook everything and love, love, love to bake.

How do you motivate yourself when inspiration takes a vacation?
I write every day. Even if it is just a few sentences, I write. But, there are times when I struggle to get the words out. At these times, I do research and hope something inspires me. IF that doesn’t work, I re-read my characters GMC and that usually gets me going.

Got a recipe you want to share?
There are too many recipes, but this is one that I make often and my family loves it.

Chicken Pot Pie

Crust
1  box of already made pie crust such as Pillsbury®  pie crusts, softened as directed on box

Filling
2 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup chopped onion
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 can (14 oz) chicken broth
1/2 cup milk
2 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken
1 cup Frozen peas thawed
1 cup sliced fresh carrots
½ cup of sliced celery
1 egg
1/2 cup of milk

  1. Heat oven to 425°F. Make pie crusts as directed on box for Two-Crust Pie, using 9-inch glass pie plate. I poke holes all over the bottom crust with a fork to ensure even cooking and a nice crisp crust.
  2. In 2-quart saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add onion; cook 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until tender. Stir in flour, salt and pepper until well blended. Gradually stir in broth and milk, cooking and stirring until bubbly and thickened.
  3. I take the carrots and celery and put them in the microwave with water to pre-cook a bit. Otherwise, they are too al dente.
  4. Stir in chicken and mixed vegetables. Remove from heat. Spoon into crust-lined pie plate. Top with second crust; seal edge and flute. Cut slits in several places in top crust. Be creative or as rustic as you wish with the crust design.
  5. For a lovely brown crust, mix the egg and 1/2 cup of milk and brush over crust before baking.
  6. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown. During last 15 to 20 minutes of baking, cover edge of crust with strips of foil to prevent excessive browning. Let stand 5-10 minutes before serving. Sounds delicious. Chicken Pot Pie is on of my favorite comfort foods. Brings back childhood with a bang. Speaking ofThanksgivingg, I bet this is good with turkey too.
Any advice for new writers just starting out?
Read everything, even non-fiction. Sometimes I even read the newspaper because there may be a story that inspires.

What genre or genres do you write?
I am working on a YA series and I’ve dabbled in Contemporary similar to Harlequin Presents

Tell us about Highland Hope, Book 1 Wild Thistle Trilogy (buy link:
Highland Hope is book 1 in a series about three sisters who are strong, independent, yet tied to each other after the death of their father. Set in the Scottish Highlands in the early 1700s, Highland Hope features Hope the eldest of the MacAlister sisters. She’s the laird of the clan and sometimes forgets she needs to let others help her, especially the hero Aidan who has come to take away her lairdship.

What’s your current WIP?
I am currently working on Highland Honor, Book 3 of the Wild Thistle Trilogy. Honor is the youngest sister, a healer, who at first seems to be shy, but there is an undeniable strength to her character.

And finally, where can we find  you?
