Robyn Carr's New Book -The Life She Wants. Review and Giveaway.

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 4 comments
In my eyes, Robyn Carr  can't write a bad book. The RWA agrees that she's a romantic treasure. They proved it by awarding her the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the highest honors the Romance Writers of America bestows. This award is presented to a living author in recognition of significant contributions to the romance genre.
I am blessed because I got an ARC of this book, so I have a copy to give one lucky reader.
Robyn's newest book The Life She Wants  is a Riches to Rags story.
Emma Compton's financier husband, indicted as the author of a Bernie Madoff-type Ponzi scheme, caps his betrayal by committing suicide. The court acquits her of complicity, but Emma's left as the vindictive focus of the press and disappointed investors. Armed with a small bank balance and very few possessions, she decides to start over in the small California town she left years ago.
But her hometown doesn't want her. The only person willing to give her a job is the woman who caused her to sever ties with the town in the first place. Riley Kerrigan was her best friend until Riley got pregnant by Emma’s boyfriend Jock. The betrayal and the epic quarrel that followed scarred Emma and Riley both.
This is a story of hardship, healing, renewal and family, and, of course, true love. There are other threads and I am going to let you discover them.
In my mind, Robyn Carr can't write a bad book. She always draws me into her world. This stand- alone book is no exception. I loved every minute of it.
I received an ARC of The Life She Wants. That’s a lovely gift for the readers of my blog. Because I always buy Robyn’s books and they are all on my keeper shelves.
Robyn Carr is a very busy human being. She began her career as an author more than 25 years ago. “I was trained as a nurse but found it impossible to get work because my husband was constantly being transferred. At the time, I was reading a lot of genre fiction for the sheer entertainment value, and I thought to myself, ‘I can write this!’”
And how was her first foray into the world of literature received? “It was universally panned. I thought I had written Gone with the Wind, but in actuality it was complete trash.” In fact, it was on her third try that Robyn finally succeeded in becoming a published author.
Now that Robyn’s two children are grown—and finally out of the house—she has the luxury of a little free time. “Until my kids grew up, I didn’t realize that a person could have hobbies other than laundry,” she jokes. But it turns out not to be hobbies that keep Robyn busy when she isn’t writing— she has found her niche in community service.
She has mentored a seniors’ memoir-writing group, attends book club chats in and out of state whenever possible and is working with her local library on the Carr Chat Series, a program centered on fund-raising and visiting-author events that bring writers, their books and the community together. “It is the people in my life that fill the well,” she says. “Especially the people who share my love for books and writing.”
Thanks for reading, my friends. Enter below to win the book. I am paying postage on this, so US only. Sorry. Happy Week to you.

Making an Anthology #giveaway Summer Sizzle

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 6 comments

My Chapter of the Romance Writers of America, Los Angeles Romance Writers (LARA) just released a short story collection called Summer Sizzle.
Personally, there are times when a short story fits my reading time. And romance collections suit my heart.
LARA is going to sizzle up your summer by giving away a copy to one lucky reader. Summer Sizzle is available across all platforms, so you can let me know which eform you want.
I asked Beverly Diehl, the anthology coordinator some questions.
First why would a RWA chapter do an anthology?
Well, that ship had already sailed; LARA (Los Angeles Romance Authors) had already put out an anthology, Five Minute Love Stories. So the 2015 LARA Board of Directors decided that we would do not one more, but two, so that we could offer a boxed set of three, and each collection individually. Oooh. That sounds good.
That's the sales side; creating a revenue stream helps the chapter financially, promotes the chapter as a whole, the individual authors, and the romance genre in general.
More importantly, it creates a bridge for newbie and intermediate authors to have the challenge of writing stories "to order," dealing with edits, promotion, and a taste of the entire professional writing experience. And it gives them something they've written they can hand to Aunt Mildred. (If Aunt Mildred likes steamy romance, that is.)
Samanthe Beck, Roz Lee, Charlene Sands and Lynne Marshall are best-selling authors, Why would a multi-published author participate in a project like this?
On the self-promotion side, because so many great professionally published authors from other genres are included, it offers the opportunity to pick up new fans from those of other authors. It offers a home for stories they might want to tell, that don't fit in the lines or series they're currently working on. It offers a chance to stretch their writing muscles; writing a short story is different from a novella from a novel from a series.

Finally, it's a great way to pay it forward, to a chapter that has offered support and encouragement for years, for many of them, in their journey to becoming or succeeding as professional writers. Lovely reason!

What did you learn as anthology coordinator?
I'm glad you asked (okay, you didn't ask, but I wanted to answer this.  Oh, please do. I should have asked.
1) Writers write procrastinate. Deadlines, reminders, and harassment encouragement are necessary to get stories in – and most of the ones in this collection came in at the last minute. We went from wondering if we were going to have to cancel the project, to having an abundance of wonderful stories.
2) There are a lot of moving parts to creating an anthology like this. We needed volunteers to check the anthology submission box, to handle sending the stories out to judges, to coordinate getting them back from judges. We needed people to help us find professional cover artists (John Phan designed ours, and I love it!), and professional editors (Mackenzie Walton, who did a tremendous job). The 2015-2016 LARA boards saw to it our professionals were paid, got our ISBN's purchased, and helped create a marketing plan for our newbie authors to learn how to promote this work. That is awesome!
Other members wrote blurbs for Amazon, did the interior design and uploading to the many sites where Summer Sizzle is available for purchase. And I know I am forgetting some of the many tasks here.
Basically, everyone in the chapter helped in some way. (Or else they moved too fast for me to snag 'em.)
So I won't list them all by name here, it's in the acknowledgments section. But Summer Sizzle, and the upcoming anthology, Holiday Ever After, are definitely "It Takes a Chapter" projects.
3) I am blessed to be a member of a chapter of RWA® with some amazingly talented authors who write delightful stories. Here's a sample of our log lines:

Get swept away in this summer, love-at-first-sight fantasy every single girl dreams of in Roz Lee's Summer League!

In Shelby Ellis' Under the Light of a Thousand Stars, when Keeley was sixteen she vowed to spend every summer of her life on the island, but that was #BeforeTannerBuchanan broke her heart. How will she find her way back?

Can a blindfolded Ravannah learn to follow her sexy ballroom dance instructor in Tonya Plank's Lead Me?

In Karen Ehrenberg's Snooze You Lose, love and sparks fly when kismet is given a push for two headstrong journalists and surf junkies.

In The Shore Thing by Charlene Sands.Evie Marigold is protecting her heart and her livelihood, but sexy surfer/entrepreneur Ian Sterling threatens to steal them both on the Pacific sands

In Lynne Marshall's Something Borrowed, Something New, it's the wedding catering staff who are star-crossed lovers. Can these hard-working immigrants find a happily ever after despite coming from families who are traditional enemies?

Take one stranded actress with a secret, a small town veterinarian, and add a hideously ugly dog with worse manners. In Beverly Diehl's The Dog Days of Summer, can the sexy vet – and the dog – win Panick's heart before Hollywood calls her home? I am buying it for this logline.

One pretty witch trapped between Heaven and Hell, one ruthless demon after a soul, and one smitten angel willing to risk it all for love, in Ophelia Bell's Falling for Her.

In Samanthe Beck's Keeping Her Handyman, he’s giving his runaway bride a night so hot she'll beg for forever.

Spring's Summer by Kara Winters: As the summer nears its end, the goddess of Spring knows she will soon see her beloved husband Hades once more. But Hades has a few tricks up his sleeve for their reunion.

Marla Murphy contributed two stories: Model Behavior Chad is a moonlighting paramedic modeling his hot body for a figure-drawing class. Caroline is a plus-size artist recovering from her ex-lover's fat insults. Can Chad mend her heart with his own vision of her enticing curves?

Finding Cowboy The friendly character actor, who never gets star billing, is charmed by a pretty young woman. When sparks ignite, will it be the chance for the sexy sidekick to finally get the girl?

See what I mean? And that's only some  of the twenty fabulous stories included in Summer Sizzle.

I'm happy to announce we're giving away a copy of Summer Sizzle to one lucky winner. And I will also be popping back in to answer any questions your blog readers may have about this project.

Susan, thank you so much for having me – and it's not sucking up to say how much I enjoyed Time and Forever, and am looking forward to your next book.
Thank you , Beverly. And it's not sucking up to say yours is the first story I'm going to read in Summer Sizzle. I love that logline.

Meet Veronica Scott Sci Fi Romance Author. #giveaway

Posted by Susan B James on 2:30:00 AM with 4 comments
Meet Veronica Scott, multi published author, USA today Happily Ever After columnist and great human who is giving away a copy of her latest novel, Hostage To The Stars.

Veronica, please tell us a little bit more about yourself.
I started writing at the age of seven, with a very involved tale of princesses, flying cats, winged horses and a riverboat captain as the hero. I illustrated it myself too, which probably wasn’t the best idea. (Princess with flying cat? I want to read it. Please consider rewriting it for the children's market.) I’ve since moved on to other genres and have thirteen books published. I’m a full-time author now but my day job for many years was in the business side of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which was always fun and exciting. I have two daughters, one grandson and two cats…Elvis Presley’s best friend once serenaded me…I am the very proud recipient of a NASA Exceptional Service Medal…
And I’m an official Star Trek Crew Member, having read the role of a Red Shirt in the recent “City on the Edge of Forever” audiobook! I had seven words of dialog but hey, I was in a scene with Kirk and Spock!

Triple wow. I am awed by your accomplishments and the fact you made it into one of my favorite series.

I love firsts, so tell me about the moment when a publisher told you they wanted to publish your book. Carina Press was doing Ancient World romances in 2011 and put out a call for submissions, so I sent in my Priestess of the Nile. Angela James called me one afternoon to tell me they wanted to acquire the book and I was so incoherent with astonishment that she finally said (nicely) something to the effect of “You did want to have this book published, right?” Of course I said yes! And that was my first book to be published.

What is the most exciting moment, so far, in your writing career? Nalini Singh is my favorite author in the world and she recently told me (and kindly tweeted too!) how much she enjoyed my novel Star Cruise: Outbreak.  THAT was a moment – wow. I love Nalini Singh. To have someone whose writing you love say they love your book is a big dream of mine. I am so happy you achieved it.

What is your favorite pastime, other than writing?
I love to read, watch movies, build Lego sets with my grandson, go for long walks…and spend wayyyy too much time on the social media!
Haven't started the Lego yet. Grandson is 7 months. The rest of it is very familiar.

How do you motivate yourself when inspiration takes a vacation? I’m pretty fortunate that I have more ideas than I have time for, but I do enjoy cruising the Southern California freeways, blasting loud rock n roll music and thinking over plot twists.

Any advice for new writers just starting out?
Try to write every day, even if you only get a few words on the page. The more you write, the more the creativity flows and you can build on the progress you’ve made. And don’t self-edit as you go on the first draft! Just write – even if the prose is clunky when it hits the page (and mine usually is), then you have something you can work with.
What genre or genres do you write?
I write science fiction romance set in the far future and paranormal romance set in ancient Egypt. But always romance! I’d love to write a Regency romance someday, with a waltzing Duke and a snowbound inn and a governess….and that’s as far as I ever get.
Here’s the story: He rescued her from space pirates … but can he keep them both safe from the far greater evil stalking a deserted planet?

Space travel without Kidnap & Ransom insurance? Not a good idea. University instructor and researcher Sara Bridges can’t afford it, so when pirates board her cruise liner, she’s taken captive along with the mistress of a wealthy man, and brought to a deserted planet. When a military extraction team sent to rescue the mistress refuses to take Sara too, she’s left to the mercies of a retired Special Forces soldier, along as consultant.
Reluctantly reactivated and coerced into signing up for the rescue operation to the planet Farduccir where he once was deployed, Sgt. Johnny Danver just wants to get the job done. But when the team leader leaves one captured woman behind, he breaks away to rescue her himself.
As Johnny and Sara traverse the barren landscape, heading for an abandoned base where they hope to call Sectors Command for help, they find villages destroyed by battle and stripped of all inhabitants. A lone survivor tells a horrific tale of the Sectors’ alien enemy, the Mawreg, returning after being pushed out …
Searching for evidence to give the military, Johnny is captured. He regains consciousness in a Mawreg cage–with Sara next to him. Death is preferable to what the aliens will do to them… And even if they do escape their captors, can they alert the military in time to prevent another invasion of the Sectors?
Sounds fabulous. I want to read it.
What’s your current WIP?
I’m working on another scifi romance. It’s too soon to really talk about the plot but the hero is a Sectors Special Forces soldier and there’s going to be a lot of action ,adventure and romance. After that I’ll write another in my STAR CRUISE series, set aboard an interstellar cruise liner.

Here’s a short excerpt from Hostage To The Stars:
One minute Sara was sound asleep in her bunk in the tiny cabin on board the Star Swan and the next moment the sound of alarms jolted her into wakefulness. Sara threw on a robe and stuck her head into the corridor. “What’s happening?” she asked a passing crewman.
“Pirates. We’re being boarded.” He looked her up and down. “You’d better get dressed, ma’am.”
Saluting, he moved toward the gravlift.
As she shut the portal to her cabin, she was puzzled by the calmness of the man’s demeanor. Was this a terrifying disaster, as the klaxons suggested? Or was it a routine situation and they’d be on their way shortly? She wasted no time in getting dressed, wishing she had a weapon, which was ridiculous of course because what would she – a Sectors university researcher – do with a weapon? Especially if the ship’s crew wasn’t putting up any fight. She had little of any value with her, but she took a moment to hide her ring and a bracelet, wrapped in a scarf under the bunk. She knew the cache wouldn’t escape even a perfunctory search but the jewelry had sentimental value. Why not at least try to outsmart the pirates, if the bastards were greedy enough to search even her closet-size cabin?
“All passengers and crew will report to the dining room at once,” The ship’s AI announced, adding, “Per protocol, no weapons allowed.”
Sara joined the small group of people moving through the corridor. She grabbed the sleeve of a crew member she recognized, the stewardess. The Star Swan wasn’t a big cruise liner like the Nebula-class ships. She could never afford that much luxury on her academic pittance of a salary. Carrying mostly cargo, this vessel only had a few cabins for passengers and the cheaper fare reflected the few amenities. This woman had been friendly and efficient about any request.
“Excuse me,” Sara said, “Was the earlier announcement about pirates on the level?”
“Yes.” The crew member didn’t stop walking but she gave Sarah an odd look. “It’s not a rare occurrence in this quadrant. Unfortunately for us, we were stopped to make minor repairs on the engines in this old bucket and the pirates were out hunting.” She stepped into the gravlift and Sara followed. “I’ve been through this before. Most of us have. These are human-descent pirates, from Farduccir, not the Shemdylann.”
“Oh.” Sara digested the information as she ascended next to the stewardess. She fought the vertigo gravlifts always gave her. Even she had heard of the alien Shemdylann.  “So what happens next?”
“The pirates are mostly interested in our cargo. Probably offloading it now in fact.” Her companion shrugged. “Everything’s insured.”
Sara stepped off the landing ledge into the corridor. The longer the stewardess talked, the more calm Sara felt as her adrenaline levels subsided. This incident would make an exciting tidbit to tell people about when she got home. “So the raiders don’t bother the passengers and crew?”
“You never know with pirates.” The woman seemed ill at ease, but not afraid.  “Our line pays the pre-negotiated ransom on the spot, credits transmitted to a bank on New Switzerland. Routine. Expense of doing business in this part of the Sector.”
She’d arrived at the cafeteria and Sara saw the other passengers clustered at one table in the front of the room.
“You’d better go join them. You can’t sit with the crew.” The stewardess gave her a not so gentle push. “Good luck.”
Sinking sensation in the pit of her stomach again, Sara grabbed her arm. “Why do I need luck? You said there’s a preset ransom for us. Routine.”
She received a pitying stare now, as the crew woman broke her grip. “For the ship and the crew. You’re on your own. I hope you have good K&R insurance.”

Meet Robyn Carr and What We Find #Giveaway

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 8 comments

Every time a new Robyn Carr comes out I do a happy dance. Robyn builds towns, character by character. Her writing is a wonderful blend of women's fiction and romance. I discovered Robyn's Grace Valley series in 2005. I went back and searched out every book she'd written to that point. I caught up on the Virgin River series; then pre-ordered each new title.

Her first book Chelynne, a historical romance was published in 1978. In 2011, she became an "overnight sensation" when a Virgin River Christmas hit the New York Times Best Seller list. Robyn's made a home on the list ever since.

This year she is the recipient of the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the highest honors the Romance Writers of America bestows. This award is presented to a living author in recognition of significant contributions to the romance genre. It will be presented to Robyn at the 2016 RWA National Convention in San Diego.

Robyn latest book, What We Find comes out April 5th. AND, dearest readers, I got an ARC and I’m giving it away. (Reluctantly since I will need to buy another copy to keep. But I would have bought one anyway. I keep all my Robyn Carr’s.)

What We Find
Sullivan's Crossing, a small Colorado town near the Continental Divide hiking trails is the setting for a new saga of family, loss, forgiveness and most of all, love. When successful neurosurgeon, Maggie Sullivan's personal and professional lives start falling apart, she heads back to her birth place to heal. She didn't count on being attracted to the reticent stranger who is staying at her father's campground. But when her father suffers a heart attack, Cal's the one who steps up to help.
In my eyes, Robyn can do no wrong. She's always bringing me new people to love. And what a perfect setting. When I think of how many different kinds of people take to the big trails to hike, I know Robyn's got a wealth of material and characters to draw from. I love the characters I've already met and I can't wait for book 2

EXCERPT (from chapter one)
Maggie Sullivan sought refuge in the stairwell between the sixth and seventh floors at the far west end of the hospital, the steps least traveled by interns and residents racing from floor to floor, from emergency to emergency. She sat on the landing between two flights, feet on the stairs, arms crossed on her knees, her face buried in her arms. She didn’t understand how her heart could feel as if it was breaking every day. She thought of herself as much stronger.
“Well now, some things never change,” a familiar voice said.
She looked up at her closest friend, Jaycee Kent. They had gone to med school together, though residency had separated them. Jaycee was an OB and Maggie, a neurosurgeon. And… they had hidden in stairwells to cry all those years ago when med-school life was kicking their asses. Most of their fellow students and instructors were men. They refused to let the men see them cry.
Maggie gave a wet, burbly huff of laughter. “How’d you find me?” Maggie asked.
“How do you know you’re not in my spot?”
“Because you’re happily married and have a beautiful daughter?”
“And my hours suck, I’m sleep-deprived, have as many bad days as good and…” Jaycee sat down beside Maggie. “And at least my hormones are cooperating at the moment. Maggie, you’re just taking call for someone, right? Just to stay ahead of the bills?”
“Since the practice shut down,” Maggie said. “And since the lawsuit was filed.”
“You need a break. You’re recovering from a miscarriage and your hormones are wonky. You need to get away, especially away from the emergency room. Take some time off. Lick your wounds. Heal.”
     “He dumped me,” Maggie said.
     Jaycee was clearly shocked. “What?”
“He broke up with me. He said he couldn’t take it anymore. My emotional behavior, my many troubles. He suggested professional help.”
Jaycee was quiet. “I’m speechless,” she finally said. “What a huge ass.”
“Well, I was crying all the time,” she said, sniffing some more. “If I wasn’t with him, I cried when I talked to him on the phone. I thought I was okay with the idea of no children. I’m almost thirty-seven, I work long hours, I was with a good man who was just off a bad marriage and already had a child…”
“I’ll give you everything but the good man,” Jaycee said. “He’s a doctor, for God’s sake. Doesn’t he know that all you’ve been through can take a toll? Remove all the stress and you still had the miscarriage! People tend to treat a miscarriage like a heavy period but it’s a death. You lost your baby. You have to take time to grieve.”
“Gospel,” Maggie said, rummaging for a tissue and giving her nose a hearty blow. “I really felt it on that level. When I found out I was pregnant, it took me about fifteen minutes to start seeing the baby, loving her. Or him.”
“Not to beat a dead horse, but you have some hormone issues playing havoc on your emotions. Listen, shoot out some emails tonight. Tell the ones on the need-to-know list you’re taking a week or two off.”
“No one knows about the pregnancy but you and Andrew.”
“You don’t have to explain—everyone knows about your practice, your ex-partners, the lawsuit. Frankly, your colleagues are amazed you’re still standing. Get out of town or something. Get some rest.”
“You might be right,” Maggie said. “These cement stairwells are killing me.”
Jaycee put an arm around her. “Just like old times, huh?”

Thank you for being here, Robyn. I love firsts, so tell me about the moment when you found you’d made your first sale.We had just moved to CA and, as usual, my husband had to leave town so it was me with two little kids in a house filled with boxes. I didn't know anyone, didn't even know my neighbors. There was no RWA but I had a critique group back in TX. We didn't have cell phones or computers, I had no way to reach my husband and long distance was a per minute charge, something like ten cents a minute which, back in '78, was a lot of money. I didn't even have a bottle of wine in the house. I made a couple of long distance calls and then I think I unpacked boxes. But I unpacked boxes with a smile on my face. The next morning I excitedly told the pre school teacher, the only person I knew. The next day when I took my son to pre school, she gave me a cake she'd made for me in the shape of an open book. It said, "Chelynne by Robyn Carr" Her name is Janet and we're still friends to this day.

How much of your actual life gets written into your fictional stories? Do you ever use real people as inspiration for your characters? As inspiration—yes. But as actual characters, no. Real people don’t usually come off well in fiction. I take traits and experiences and emotional reactions from people I’ve met or read about and blend them into composite characters. But experiences and bits of dialogue from my life sneak in—happily.

As a writer, what kinds of books inspire you? Do you ever find time to read when you aren't writing your own novels?
I read every day. I work long hours, but in the evening after dinner I read—and I am inspired by everything I read, whether it’s mainstream or non-fiction or some other genre. I have a particular taste for contemporary romance and women’s fiction. My favorite authors are Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Kristan Higgins, Jill Shalvis, Susan Andersen to name a few. For my reading pleasure I enjoy intelligent, romantic, humorous, sexy novels with strong heroines.
We have similar tastes.
Your characters have issues. All of them. And in that sense, sometimes your books feel more like women’s fiction than romance. Is that something you do purposefully?
This is what I love about women’s fiction! Every living woman has either faced those issues in her own life or she has a sister, neighbor, friend, co-worker—someone she knows or knows of—who has grappled with women’s issues. The range of women’s issues is so wide, it’s infinitesimal. Women’s issues are those issues that challenge a woman’s happiness because they’re women—everything from salaries to mothering to friendship to the more dramatic and frightening issues of domestic violence, death, assault. We've seen people who make positive changes in their lives because of these challenges just as we've seen people really blow it, make such bad choices it nearly (or even absolutely) ruins their lives.
Of course, men face all the same issues/problems. But men and women think so differently about things. Men are better at compartmentalizing—they have the job compartment, the husband compartment, the father compartment and so on. They don’t think about how their home lives affect their relationship on their bowling team or their success or problems on the job. With women, everything is connected to everything else—their jobs are connected to their relationships connected to their goals and to their fears, et cetera. And while men want a solution to one particular issue in one specific compartment, women tend to examine everything that’s going on within them and around them.

Thank you, Robyn. And congratulations on the Nora Roberts lifetime Achievement Award. I am looking forward to the next book in the Sullivan’s Crossing Series.

Meet Laura Sheehan and her Sweet, Funny, Erotic Romance Novella

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 6 comments
I don't usually read erotic romance, but Laura Sheehan's description of Hidden Fortune in our  Los Angeles Romance Writers - LARA yahoo group intrigued me. Sweet, funny, erotic? Really? I asked her to send me a copy for review. Her description was right on. I loved it! This delightful well-written novella is sweet, funny, and has a couple of well done erotic scene. It also has a treasure hunt and a mystery.
Ava is a lawyer who doesn't take chances - in life or in love. But one summer night at a carnival, her best friend makes her promise to do something spontaneous before the night is over. And she does. She visits the Carnival's fortune teller, whose words send her on an adventure she could never have imagined.
I love good writing and I asked Laura to appear on the blog.

Laura, please tell us a little about yourself.
I live in Los Angeles with my husband and precocious daughter, both of whom have an insatiable curiosity, love to cause trouble, and are quick to laugh.  Each day is a chaotic, glorious adventure, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

I love firsts, so tell me about the first time you kissed your true love?
I met my husband at a house party when
I was a freshman in college. The place was packed with people drinking and laughing and generally being young. We spent the first half of the night flirting outrageously until my girlfriends proclaimed to the crowds that it was time for us to head back to our dorm.  Upon hearing of my impending departure, and in front of throngs of partygoers both friends and strangers, he spontaneously grabbed me and kissed me.  Although I’d been hoping for a kiss for most of the night, the suddenness of it was the most delightful shock I’d ever experienced!  The whole room went silent for a moment (or perhaps I couldn’t hear anything beyond the pounding of my heart?), and then erupted in hoots and hollers.  That was almost 17 years ago, and we’ve spoken to each other every single day since the night we met.

What is your favorite pastime, other than writing?
I am a semi-professional dancer, and love to perform on stage whenever I can.  Now that I have a toddler, it’s been hard to find the time to rehearse and perform in a real show, but I try to keep dancing by teaching and attending classes whenever I can.  My favorite is Musical Theatre/Broadway dance, but I’ll happily take a ballet, jazz, or tap class too, depending on what fits my schedule.

Got a recipe you want to share?
Funny you should ask!  I have never been much of a cook, but one of my resolutions for 2016 is to start making more food at home.  In addition to being a newbie at this whole kitchen business, I’m also a vegan with very limited time/resources/skill and I have a toddler.  So talk about making it challenging to find good recipes!  But here’s a link from a friend of mine, it’s a great recipe for Spinach Tofu Risotto which I managed to make all on my own without burning anything down: http://thespianlawyer.blogspot.com/2011/09/sunday-dinner-spinach-tofu-risotto.html

Any advice for new writers just starting out?
If you write romance, I recommend joining Romance Writers of America (RWA).  It’s a fabulous resource for new writers, with access to tons of articles about the craft and business for writers.

What genre or genres do you write?
I primarily write romantic suspense, paranormal romance, and fantasy.

Tell us about Hidden Fortune.
I wrote this novella in 2013-14 when I was pregnant with my daughter, which was a challenge all in its own! It is an erotic romance novella, a sweet and funny story (with some steaming hot sex scenes) about being bold enough to break out of the every-day patterns that hold us back from discovering new things, like true love.
Blurb: Ava has always played it safe, but after a midnight run-in with a handsome stranger, she discovers that perhaps fortune favors the bold. Can she find the courage to seek the ultimate treasure?

What’s your current WIP?
I’m currently working on a fantasy/paranormal romance, although I also have an idea for a new romantic suspense that is waiting impatiently for me to nurture into a manuscript. With a toddler also pulling at my leg for attention, I don’t know how soon I’ll be able to write, but I’m looking forward to getting the stories out of my head and onto paper soon.

And finally, where can we find you?
You can find me at my blog, www.ReadLaura.com.  And if you liked Hidden Fortune, I encourage you to check out my romantic suspense novel, Dancing with Danger

Robena Grant is here with a giveaway.

Posted by Susan B James on 3:30:00 AM with 18 comments
Meet romantic suspense author Robena Grant whose sixth novel, Ring Me Later, came out last week.
Robena is Australian by birth but resides in Southern California. She has two adult children, enjoys reading, swimming, friends, simple dinners, a glass of wine, a board game, and heaven forbid…karaoke! Travel has always been her greatest love. France, Australia, Italy, England, and Scotland have featured in her stories. She often chooses a setting that has captured her senses through travel. And, Yes, I got that from her blog.

Sneaky. Very sneaky. J Thanks for hosting me today, Susan
Robena, I am delighted to have you. The first book I read of yours was Blue Dolphin and I was completely immersed. (Excuse me.I think I just punned.)
I love firsts, so tell me about the moment when a publisher told you they wanted to publish your book.

It was early in 2013. I was absolutely stunned. Another book was a Golden Heart nominee that year, and I ended up signing with the Wild Rose Press for all three books in the series. There were continuing characters and that was a stipulation of the first contract. So that was a whirlwind year. Golden Heart Nominee, too? Definitely a heart to remember.

I know you love to travel. Do you remember your first trip?
Yes. It was by train from the Snowy Mountains in the southern part of New South Wales in Australia. It took forever! Mum, Dad, and seven kids. We travelled to the mid coast where we were relocating and I remember sleeping on the train. Some of the smaller kids slept in the overhead luggage racks, but I was ten and chubby, so I had to stay on the seat.
I can relate. When we left Capetown, we flew home to New York. It was a four day plane flight with several stops. This was 1956, three years before the first passenger jet. There were bunks, but only for rich people.Mom, Dad and three kids. My three-year-old sister, Kelly, kept climbing into older men's laps and asking them if they want to color in. Personally I think she wanted a shot at one of those bunks.

Other than your own, who are your favorite (heroes/heroines/writers) in your genre?

I rarely read romantic suspense, but my favorite contemporary author is Jennifer Crusie. My favorite heroine is Min from Bet Me. I adore Jane Austen and re-read Pride and Prejudice at least once a year.
I love Jennifer Cruisie.

What is the most exciting moment, so far, in your writing career?

Being a Golden Heart nominee for Desert Exposure.
Fabulous!
Sappy movie to cry over?

Sense and Sensibility (Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant.) The scene where he comes back and she’s so vulnerable, and then she learns he’s come back for her and she cries and wails, and well, I cry with her every time.

Karaoke song to sing?
Stop! In The Name of Love, by The Supremes.
 Yes!

Any advice for new writers just starting out?

Merry Christmas to All and a Joyous New Year.

Posted by Susan B James on 12:00:00 AM with 3 comments
Last year I turned 70. (I know I should spell that out, but I like writing 7. It's my lucky number.) I know this is a lucky decade for me. I think my first year of the decade has proven that in spades.

In January I traveled to Portage, Michigan for my granddaughter, Eleanor's second birthday. As you can see, her parents are raising a reader.
Two days after her birthday, my debut romance, Time and Forever came out. You know what a gift that is.

Blurb:
1969. Love was free, man walked on the moon, and Sherry and Lorena found the loves of their lives. Sherry shared a kiss that dreams were made of, with a stranger on the tube in London, and ran away. Lorena found the love of her life in Los Angeles and married him.
2014. Sherry’s a successful businesswoman with two grown sons. Lorena’s an actress on a popular sitcom. Sherry’s husband dumped her for a younger woman eighteen years ago. Lorena’s husband died of cancer. Sherry wants a second chance at love. Lorena can’t imagine loving anyone but Dave.
When Lorena finds The Castle, which specializes in Virtual Reality adventures to any point in time, they both jump at the chance to play. But when the door opens to 1969’s London, it’s apparent they’ve walked into more than just a game.

I started sending it out for reviews. So far I have 44 with a 4.9 star rating. I am over the moon about that.

I came home to Los Angeles and took my first course in Musical Improv from UCB's Tara Copeland. I fell in love with the form. My son, Christopher Corbin, decided we would be the only Mother/Son musical improv group. We hired a coach and did our first show. Chris belongs to the Musical Improve group, Meaningful Touch. Stephanie Bentley, one of his team mates, read Time and Forever and loved the characters so much that she offered to do the narration for the audio book.
I think she did a wonderful job.

In May I began traveling, First to Chicago for  a wedding, then back to Portage to visit my granddaughter. From there I went to Burlington for my cousin's graduation from college. She's 79 and has already started graduate school.

Luiz Guzman and Ansley Carnahan
On Memorial day weekend, my critique group staged a reunion at our partner, Lupe Fernandez's wedding.
Pen and Ink and adjunct correspondents.
Victoria Krol, Lupe Fernandez,  David Krol, Susan Berger, Kris Kahrs, Angel Fernandez, Hilde Garcia Krol and Sam Krol
I had two months to concentrate on writing and revising. before leaving again.
I submitted a picture book, Mom Is There A Santa? to Guardian Angel Publishing and Lynda Burch accepted it. Hooray. One of my favorite illustrators, K.C. Snider will be illustrating.

In July I went to Brazil to see John of God with a group from my church. A profoundly lovely experience. After that, in rapid succession, I went to Honolulu for a memorial service for my beloved friend, Cynthia Mooney, Seattle, where I attended a Jayne Anne Krentz book signing and Port Angeles to visit my sister, Kelly.

When I came home, I attended the SCBWI Writers retreat - One of my favorite writing events.
I attended the meetings of my local RWA chapter, LARA and met some wonderful encouraging fellow authors. And I discovered some great new reads.

This year I learned that my best revision tool is reading aloud. This tool helped me through the latest revision of my multicultural mid-grade MS, Tasha the Magnificent.
I submitted my WIP, Kate's Hero,  to four people. Biggest lesson: My story starts five chapters in, I finished a second draft during NaNoWriMo. There will most definitely be a third draft before I send it out into the world to Beta Readers,

On December 9th I flew to Baltimore to be my friend Donna's chemo partner for nine days. I am amazed at how well she handles it.
While I was there, Time and Forever came out in paperback. I immediately ordered a copy for Donna. She is a voracious reader and prefers real books. Donna had already been through the first fifteen books I sent her, She read the book in two hours! If I could read that fast, my life would be a lot simpler. Donna had read a beta version and wasn't impressed. I am happy to say this time she loved it. I loved holding my first paperback.

On December 18th I flew to Portage to spend Christmas with Jim, Mary and Ella.  We are having a wonderful, but tiring time. Ella's sleep schedule has turned erratic.

If you'd like a Christmas bit of Doggerel, I also post at Pen and Ink and this week, it's my turn.

I wish all of us Holidays touched with magic and a bright and creative New Year.
Of course I have a giveaway:

Love funny and suspenseful romance? Meet J.L. Hammer

Posted by Susan B James on 12:00:00 AM with 11 comments

I read J.L. Hammer’s NOTHING BUT TROUBLE and immediately asked her if she would appear on my blog. Here's why:
“Nothing But Trouble is everything I love… hysterical, sexy, page-turning fun!”– USA Today bestselling author Samanthe Beck
Blurb:
With an angry loan shark hot on her heels, Frankie Delenski flees a Vegas gentlemen’s club with one thought in mind: hide before she’s nothing more than a chalk outline. Now on the run…she finds herself stranded in a sleepy Colorado town during a storm. Her only salvation becomes the suspicious and gorgeous deputy sheriff determined to arrest her…

From the get-go, Wes Malone must restrain his lust for this stunning, unpredictable woman in a sequined bra and rely on his instincts as a cop. As he sifts through the haze of lies, the truth about her predicament is like a sucker punch to the gut. She’s in serious danger and getting involved with her means nothing but sweet, irresistible trouble…
Excerpt:
She took a moment to study the virile man before her. The strippers worked their clients into a mouth-drooling frenzy by a few shakes of their hips and a little lip-gnawing. If Frankie could work her charms on Deputy Malone, he would be at her beck and call. A strange thrill zinged through her.

With a sexy strut, she approached, giving him her best heated look. She brushed the tips of her polished nails across his chest. Hopefully, he hadn’t noticed the mud smeared across her hands or her missing pinky nail. His dark brows lifted and his expression was…amused. Determination squared Frankie’s shoulders. With a thrust, she pushed out her well-padded female attributes.

“Can’t we just forget about all this? Couldn’t you just help me get my car out of the ditch and then let me go on my way?” She tried to purr, but it sounded more like she needed a throat lozenge.

“Are you hungry?” he asked.

She frowned and then remembered she was being seductive and smiled shyly. “Hungry?”

“Yeah. The way you keep chewing on your lower lip I figured you must be starving.”
I loved this book. J.L., Please tell us a little about yourself. And inquiring minds want to know – What does the J. L. stand for.
I’m a California girl and enjoy living in my small mountain town with my hubby and two teenagers. My name is a bit extreme, being the product of hippie parents and all, so I went with my initials. I couldn’t see Justice Love Hammer on the cover of a novel. Okay, I’m completely full of it…about the name and hippie parents. But J.L. are my real initials.
I love firsts, so tell me about the moment when you found you’d made your first sale.
When I received the email from a publisher offering me a contract, at first it was suspended disbelief and then I danced with excitement. It was nice to finally get a “yes” after so many rejections. Even after five contracts, I still get excited when I receive one.
How about the first time you kissed your true love?
I’ll never forget meeting my husband. I was with a girlfriend on a barefoot cruise in the Caribbean when our ship was overtaken by pirates. The leader took a fancy to me and hey, he was downright handsome so when he said we would marry, I agreed. As you can see from our wedding photo I was still in shock but our first kiss was magical. Hmmm. Can you tell I’m a fiction writer? You have to admit fiction is so much more intriguing than reality. In truth, my hubby kissed me on my front porch, and I remember grasping his biceps and thinking “nice muscles.” As you can see from the picture (costume ball) after fourteen years of marriage we still have fun together.
 Fabulous picture.

Other than your own, who are your favorite (heroes/heroines/writers) in your genre?
I’m a fan of Karen Robards and Sandra Brown. I love their ability to weave intricate plots and keep the romance sizzling.
What is the most exciting moment, so far, in your writing career?
When my latest novel, Nothing But Trouble, released in November it ranked #80 on the Amazon bestseller list for a romance series and #20 for romantic suspense on KOBO. It was nice to reach a milestone, and I look forward to many more.
What is your favorite pastime, other than writing?
I love to read and drink wine. I also enjoy traveling with my husband. Some of my favorite places are France, Scotland, Fiji, the big island of Hawaii, and New Zealand.
Any advice for new writers just starting out?
Finish the book and find critique partners who write well and listen to their advice. I also recommend taking a class. I took three online classes from Gotham Writers’ Workshop. I learned a lot from the published authors teaching the courses.
What genre or genres do you write?
Romantic suspense. Gotta have my danger and hot guys.
Tell us about your latest release.

My latest release is the Vegas Vixens series which is centered on a bold, yet quirky group of heroines who live in the same Vegas trailer park next to the airport. Now these girls find themselves in high-stakes danger and drag the most gorgeous heroes into their messes. In NOTHING BUT TROUBLE, my heroine Frankie is working at a gentlemen’s club when she flees Vegas with a loan shark hot on her heels. She ends up in a small Colorado town with a sinfully handsome sheriff just itching to arrest her. Sigh. Some girls have all the luck.

Nothing, But Trouble introduced Lily and I can't wait to read her story.
What’s your current WIP?
I’m currently editing the next book in the series. The excitement of the Vegas Vixens continues in book 2, DEADLY TROUBLE (releasing May 2015), when Frankie’s best friend Lily takes the spotlight as she faces off with a drug lord in the jungles of Belize. Of course, she drags a drool-worthy doctor into her plight, but hey, after all a girl needs a hero.
And finally, what would be your best Christmas present ever?
I would love to have another white Christmas. There is something about snow on the ground with all the lights that makes the day even more special. I live at four thousand feet, and we had a white Christmas about five years ago.

Thank you so much for being here. Where can we find you?
Giveaway alert! One lucky reader will win an ebook copy of my novel BLUE HORIZON, an exciting story with a secret government project and a hot mercenary. Good luck and happy reading!
