Erin Bevan's Inspiration for her Sweet Biker Romance, Tank #giveaway

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 2 comments
I asked author Erin Bevan every author's favorite question: Where do you get your ideas?
She responded graciously with a post and a giveaway of one ebook copy of Tank. Please leave a comment which includes your email address to enter. Blessings!

Ideas; I am always looking for them. I might hear something, see something, and it doesn’t matter what it is, how big or small, it can lead to a wonderful array of new ideas. Or it can not.
TANK came about accidentally. I was out with a group of friends at an arcade of all places. We were sitting at a table, having a few drinks, eating less than delicious nachos when someone mentioned bikers. I don’t know how, or why this topic came up. All of those details have become lost to me, but what stuck out the most was someone mentioned a biker group that did good. BACA-Bikers Against Child Abuse, and how they stand guard at abused children’s homes if they felt scared or worried about their abuser coming back. Day or night, these big, burly, tattooed men would stand guard-for children. The idea brings tears to my eyes now.

These guys, these Average Jo Hero’s, will attend the child’s court date as a support group for the abused, let the kid ride on the back of their bikes, give the child a bandana, and do whatever possible to make the kid feel a part of the group all while surrounding the child with love.

When I heard about these guys, I had to research them. I had to know what they were about, and an idea formed. What if I had a guy who suffered a nasty past? What if I had a guy who set out to help abused children? And of course, us writers are always told to make our stories bigger in every way, so then I thought, what if this big, bad, good guy biker falls in love with someone he is trying to protect? A woman. And what if…just what if that woman was engaged…to a cop?

And that’s how TANK was born, during a desperate housewife’s night out with her girlfriends, at an arcade playing laser tag, drinking pricey drinks, and eating crappy food.
You just never know when inspiration will strike.
Thanks for that story, Erin. Here's the blurb and an excerpt for TANK  It sounds great.
Blurb:
Tyler Wilde moves to Black Widow, Texas, to join the Blue Guardians, a local biker club that helps abused women and children. He's intent on starting his life over, but a small piece of his past collides with his present when he runs into the local waitress, Annie Carter.
Annie’s the girl of his boyhood dreams, and Tyler can’t wait to get reacquainted with her. Only problem is, Annie’s engaged. But what has Tyler more troubled than the diamond on her finger is the bruise that graces her arm. To make matters worse, Annie’s abuser and intended husband is also the town’s Chief of Police.
Tyler is determined to offer Annie a safe haven, but she refuses his help until her life is hanging by a thread.

Excerpt:
The sun seared Tyler’s back, causing sweat to pour down the length of his spine and his T-shirt to stick to his skin. Nothing like the gulf coast humidity to make a man feel as if he was frying from the inside out.

Rose bushes around the town square bloomed giant Pepto-Bismol pink petals, while a gentleman in blue overalls tended to the flowers like they were his babies. Tossing a wave to the man, he rounded the corner on Holly Drive and parked his bike in front of Sandi’s, the local diner. The undercurrent scent of flowers, bacon, and fried donuts drifted in the air. Man heaven. Except for the flowery part. He’d driven by the diner everyday for two weeks but had yet to pop in. If the food tasted as good as it smelled he might have to make this place a regular hang out.

He pushed through the heavy wooden door as a bell rang overhead. Weaving around customers, all giving him a curious stare, he strolled up to the takeout cash register. Glass cases filled with donuts and the biggest kolaches he’d ever seen stared back at him. His stomach growled.

He eyed the case, his mouth watering, as he waited on a server to notice him.
“Be right there,” a tall, shapely blonde called out from across the restaurant as she handed another table their check. He’d been wrong. To hell with the donuts and bacon. She was man heaven.

A few escaped strands from her ponytail framed her face, and the closer she got to him the darker the black circles under her eyes appeared.

A spark of recognition fired in his brain while an equally hot spark ignited a red flag in his gut. It wasn’t her slightly unkempt hair or her pure look of exhaustion that rubbed him the wrong way. Despite all of that, she was still beautiful.

But her clothes. Her clothes had his head reeling.

She wore long sleeves.

In June.

In Texas.

“What can I get you?” The beauty stared up at him.

He shook off the strange feeling. A bead of sweat dripped down her forehead, fell onto her chest, and into her shirt. Her nametag was positioned right by the tantalizing skin of her chest. Annie.

Mercy.

He glanced down at the donut case. Stare at the food, big guy.

I need two dozen glazed donuts, two dozen chocolate, and a dozen sausage kolaches.”

“Got a lot to feed?” Annie grabbed a box from the counter behind her and placed it on top of the glass case in front of him.

“Yeah, Donut Day, or so I was told. It’s my turn to bring breakfast, and there’s about a dozen mechanics over at Rakes expecting it.”

“Rakes? You must be new,” a redheaded waitress noted as she rounded the corner and filled a customer’s coffee cup. While she was cute, she had a wet-behind-the-ears look to her. He’d stick with Beauty.

He nodded. “I am.”

“I’ve got your table seven covered while you do this, Annie. No big deal.”

“Thanks, Gina.” The blonde smiled at the redhead before returning her attention back to him. “I’ve brought my car to Rakes a few times, and I’ve never seen you.” Beauty grabbed a towel from the counter to wipe the sweat off her forehead, then dabbed her chest near a gold locket that hugged her collarbone.

Shit.

Her tasseled hair seemed sexier the more she dabbed. He’d never been as jealous of a towel in his whole life, the cotton fibers taunting him with their task.

He averted his gaze from the towel and her amazing chest before she labeled him a pervert. Not exactly the reputation he wanted for his new life.

“I’m sad I didn’t get to work on your car.”
God, what a horrible pick-up line. She probably thought he was a giant perv and a complete moron.

She flashed him a half-smile that burned his insides. The diamond on her finger nearly blinded him as she brushed a stray strand from her forehead. The fire inside of him fizzled out like baking soda to a grease fire.

He forced a grin then shot his gaze down to the pastry case.

“Though, I will say…” She tossed the towel aside and stared at him. “Something about your face looks oddly familiar.”

Me? Familiar?

He glanced back up. “Yours does, too, but I don’t really see how.” The spark in his brain burned brighter the more he stared at her.

“Are you from here, or is your family from here?”

“I’m not, but my grandpa was. He lived in a cabin about ten miles outside of town.”

“By Virginia Creek, right? Mr. Wooly.” Her smile grew. “Yeah, you used to come visit him. You guys would go fishing.”

“How’d you know?” He’d never talked to anyone when he came to visit his grandpa. He’d stayed in the woods, hidden and safe. Or at least, that’s how he’d felt.

He stared at her a bit longer. The blue in her eyes reignited a small light of recognition.

Could it be?
“I remember you.” She grabbed a pair of tongs off the counter top. “I used to play out by the water, and I would see you across the creek casting your line. You taught me how to skip rocks one day.”

Moments of his past flashed across his mind. It was her.

The girl across the water.

Bio:
Six years ago and nothing more than a desperate housewife, Erin Bevan began her writing journey.

As a child, reading and writing were her nemeses. It wasn’t until she found herself almost utterly alone, in a different country, that she took up the act of reading for enjoyment. Her passion for writing was born not by reading the old classics, but by reading many new tried and true authors of today: Nora Roberts, Mary Kay Andrews, Nicholas Sparks, and Tracy Brogan to name a few.

Clinging to books for friends in a land where not many spoke the English language, she found a secret passion she didn’t know existed inside of her. With nothing more than time on her hands, she honed in on the craft of writing until she finally worked up enough courage to let other people read her stories.

She spends most of her time juggling her three little people and trying to keep everyone’s lives flowing as smoothly as possible. When she isn’t using her super powers to wipe sticky goo from her children’s faces, she spends a little time dabbling in her writing career.

Five Ways to Meet A Guy and a giveaway

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 8 comments

Erin told me she had a Novella called Text Me coming out in time for Valentines Day. I knew I wanted to read it because she's a very funny writer. I asked her to write a post.
Displaying Erin2.jpgWhen Susan asked me to write a post about five ways to meet a guy that doesn’t involve bars or Starbucks I had to laugh out loud. One, because I haven’t “met” a guy in over ten years now. I met him and kept him.

Two, because I have an obsession for Starbucks, but I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen too many guys there I would be interested in dating, or that would be interested in dating me if you get my drift.

However, if I were going to look for a man, I do know a few places I would start with. So, to all of you single ladies out there, listen up.

My top five places:

1.      The gym. Yep, nothing like finding your stud muffin amongst the treadmills and the free weights. Not a gym rat, fake it. Get a membership, get a few training session with a hotty, or ask one to spot you. Guys like girls who are confident and fit. A gym helps with both of those things, and maybe you two could find other ways to get fit together. wink, wink!

2.      The dog store, dog park, dog anything. My pup attends a dog school a couple of times during the week. I see you rolling your eyes. She’s a German Shepherd who has entirely too much energy for me, so to save my house and my nerves she goes to puppy play. Anyway, while at pup school, I have seen some hotties drop their “babies” off for play as well. Not that I was looking or anything. Strike up conversation. Tell him how big his dog is. Get your mind out of the gutter. I was talking about his four-legged one!

3.      The home stores. Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, a paint store, anywhere you can go that men congregate. This is one place to be a damsel in distress. If there’s a cute guy standing next to you, act like you don’t know what a zip tie is even though you totally do. Who cares! You’ve got hotties attention, now act like he’s teaching you something, sit back and enjoy!

4.      Buffies not your thing? More of a nerd girl? Then go to the office supply stores. Nothing get’s a nerd more excited than three ring binders, post it notes and Excel.

5.      And, if you still haven’t found love in all the “right” places, you can do what my heroine did in my latest release and reach for the classifieds. Let Match, E-Harmony, Craigs list, or just the good ol’ newspaper help you find a date. And if all of that still fails, well, set your house on fire and pray for a hot fireman! Just kidding! Well, sort of!

Happy Valentine’s Day ya’ll!

Thank you, Erin. Erin's giving away an e-copy of Text Me to one lucky reader. Enter below. Here's the blurb and a sample.
Blurb:
When Erika’s ex becomes her boss less than a year after dumping her by text, she gets desperate to find a date to the corporate Valentine’s dance so he doesn’t suspect she still has feelings for him. Though not a fan of texting for the obvious reason, she doesn’t have much choice but to tap the keypad in order to gain the attention of the only viable candidate from the classified ads.

Grayson made the mistake of listening to his brother a year ago and has regretted what he did to Erika ever since. But his brother’s next suggestion just might be his salvation when he takes out an ad for a Valentine’s date…and Erika answers.

Using a pseudo name and keeping contact to text messages only, Grayson’s plans to make Erika fall back in love with him appears to be working…until the date of the dance draws near, and she pushes a meeting—face to face.

Excerpt:

Valentine’s Day.

She sank deeper into the couch. What was she going to do? She couldn’t show up alone to the company dance. Not with the chance of Grayson being there. No way.

“Maybe go to another speed dating session?” She grabbed a tissue off the coffee table and wiped the excess slime from her fingers.

“My hairdresser’s single. You want me to ask him?”

“Your hairdresser’s gay. I don’t think he’d be interested in me.”

“Really?” Megan gave her a funny stare.

“Really.” Erika snorted. “Have you not seen the picture of him and his ex-partner at his station?”

“That was his partner?” Her friend’s mouth gapped open. “I thought it was his brother.”

She shook her head. Her friend was one of the smartest people she knew, but common sense eluded the girl.

Megan popped more hearts in her mouth. “That explains so much now,” she mumbled around the candy. “No wonder my hair always looks good.”

“Yes, it does.” Erika sipped her wine.

Her friend swallowed. “Well, I’m sorry, honey. I don’t know any single guys. If I did, I’d try to date them myself.”

“That’s okay.” She sighed and slumped back onto the sofa.

“Is Grayson single?”

“I don’t know. Why are you asking?” She narrowed her gaze. “You want to date him?”

“No.” Her friend said “no” as if it was the most obvious answer in the world.
“I’m thinking about you. You wouldn’t go back out with Grayson again, would you? Please say no.” Megan’s shoulders sagged.

Go back out with Grayson. She never thought she’d be given another chance. Would she go back out with him after the way he treated her? Of course not. She deserved better, despite how wonderful he had been.

“I don’t think so. He really hurt me. I can’t give him that privilege again.”

“Good for you.” Her roommate perked up and patted her on the back. “Stay strong. You’ll find someone.”

“You’re right. I’m going to have a date for that corporate Valentine’s dance, even if I have to search the classifieds.”

“Surely, it won’t come to that.” Megan held up her glass for a toast.

Erika clinked hers with her friend’s. “Yeah, surely.”

Her roommate sat her glass down on the table and reached for more hearts.

“Here, give me one of those.”

“I love reading the little sayings.” Megan passed her a heart and tossed her dark hair behind her shoulder. “What’s yours say?”

She flipped over the candy to see the phrase. Bright pink letters stared back at her. Oh, you can’t be serious. “‘Text me’. Seriously?”

Megan burst out laughing.

“You would find that funny.” Erika popped the heart in her mouth and obliterated the little saying she had grown to hate so much.

Meet Erin Bevan and her book Cupid's Angels

Posted by Susan B James on 3:30:00 AM with 21 comments
Meet Erin Bevan whose debut romance came out this month. When I asked Erin to tell us about herself, she said she wasn't very exciting.  I beg to differ. I took this bio from her blog:
Erin Bevan was born and raised in Southwest Arkansas. She spent her teenage years working for her aunt at the local gas station flipping burgers and making milkshakes, dreaming of the day when something better would come her way, and it did in the form of a five foot six, one hundred and fifty pound engineer.
Fast forward ten years later, she found herself stuck inside an apartment in South Korea while her daughter went to preschool and her husband went to work. Alone and unable to speak the local language she turned to books for a friend. After reading a few hundred in such a short time, she decided to try her hand at writing one.
That first one sucked, but by the fifth and sixth book, Erin started to get the hang of this writing thing. Getting the first contract in the mail was a dream come true. Now, with three babies at home, she squeezes in stories one word at a time, one sentence at a time, one day at a time.
She’s a full time mom, a full time wife, with a little writer sprinkled in whenever she can get the chance. And the laundry? Well, it’s best not to open the washroom door!
My critique partner Hilde has twins and suffers from the same kind of laundry problem.
I love firsts, so tell me about the moment when a publisher told you they wanted to publish your book. Oh, that’s a story. It was December 2013. I was waiting to hear back from one more publishing house. I had received more “No’s” and negative comments about my writing than I thought I could handle. I hadn’t been writing for long, maybe two years. In reality, two or three years before you get published isn’t that long.
Still, I was pretty down by all the rejections, and I told myself that if this last house said no, I was hanging up writing for good. The e-mail came in and I began to read. The first two paragraphs were basically filled with how bad of a writer I was. I almost clicked the delete button until I saw a huge BUT in the third paragraph.
The last two paragraphs went on to tell me that this editor was willing to take the risk on me if I was willing to do the work, and a contract was attached. Now, I’ve just signed my fourth contract, and I hope they keep coming.
What is the most exciting moment, so far, in your writing career?
Most exciting moment so far has been release day for Cupid’s Angels. I had published a short story, The Ranch Hand, previously, but Cupid’s Angels was my first novel. It was a day to tell the world, I’m here for good. I am a real writer.
What is your favorite pastime, other than writing?
I like going to the gym, and I love shopping. Oh yeah, and eating!

How do you motivate yourself when inspiration takes a vacation?
Good question, and that’s something I’ve struggled with lately. Usually, I talk it out with a friend. I’m a social person, and I rely on others heavily for help and inspiration.
Got a recipe you want to share?
Nope, sorry. I’m not a great cook, but if you have something you want to share with me, I’ll let you. Sure! Check out my recipe tab and see if something appeals to you.
Any advice for new writers just starting out?
Just write. It’s going to suck at first. Don’t worry about that. With each new word on the page, you learn something. Learn about yourself, learn about your craft, and write for you.

What genre or genres do you write?
Contemporary Romance at the moment.

Tell us about Cupid’s Angels
This was a fun story to write. I like old people. They make me laugh, so I decided to write a book about them. Here is the blurb:

Ellie Childs isn’t looking for love. She’s looking for an AC technician for the Forest Wood Senior Center. But, when the repairman happens to be tall, dark, and handsome, he has the goods to make her change her mind. Unfortunately, he’s taken by a blonde Barbie.
David White moved to Cupid, Arkansas, to be closer to the woman he loves, his grandma, and away from his ex-fiancĂ©e. Believing his broken heart would never work again, he’s proven wrong. Ellie’s shimmering auburn curls and compassionate nature sends his heart thumping. His mind soars with thoughts of giving love another shot. But as luck would have it, she’s taken, and the guy she’s seeing is a real jerk.
When David’s grandmother sees how perfect Ellie would be for her grandson, she gathers the troops. She and her three friends form Cupid’s Angels. Their mission, to bring David and Ellie together. Despite their best efforts, the Angels’ plans backfire, pushing David and Ellie farther apart and into the arms of others. Or, so they think.
Will the Angels’ good intentions win out, or will their plots and schemes undermine what could have been the love of a lifetime for David and Ellie?
I read the opening chapters on Amazon and it sounds great!
What’s your current WIP?
I have two. The Night Train and Wrapped Up In You. I hope they are both available to you next year. The Night Train has been my favorite book so far to write. I’ve connected with those characters more so than any others. They’re just real and raw. I love that story.
I’m a bit stuck on Wrapped Up In You. I’m not sure which direction to go. I’m sure I’ll figure it out. It’s a Christmas story, and I’ve never wrote a Christmas story before. I do enjoy the challenge it brings.
I love Christmas stories!
