Cheryl Yeko's journey to author and Editor with Soul Mate Publishing,

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 1 comment
I am delighted to welcome Cheryl Yeko whose latest romantic suspense novel  Between Midnight and Dawn was released last week. I have no idea how Cheryl accomplishes everything, but she is also a fabulous editor with Soul Mate Publishing. She accepted and edited my book, Time and Forever and I am forever grateful that I've gotten to work with her.
Hi, Susan. Thank you for having me over. I thought I’d talk a little about how I became an author. My wonderful husband bought me a Kindle for Christmas one year and changed my world. I started reading romance novels and fell in love with them. The first year I read so voraciously that I spent over a thousand dollars on e-books. It was crazy!

After a bit, I decided to write one myself. I disappeared into my room over a long Wisconsin winter and wrote my debut novel, Protecting Rose. I submitted my manuscript to a few publishing houses, and was offered a contract with Soul Mate Publishing, which I quickly accepted. Protecting Rose went on to win the 2012 Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence in the romantic suspense category.

Well, I was hooked. Within a year I quit my job as a legal secretary and began writing full time. That was nine books and two anthologies ago. I’d like to say I was an instant success, but that’s not the case. Like any career, it takes hard work and patience. Although my books sell well, only since last summer have I felt I had my first real ‘success.’ The Notary, hit No. 4 on Amazon in the romantic suspense category. I sat on the top 100 bestselling author’s list for a month. So exciting.

But, success or not, writing is in my blood, and I live and breathe all things writing. After the first year with Soul Mate, Debby Gilbert, the owner and Senior Editor approached me and asked me to come onboard as an editor. Such a whirlwind couple of years. I have over 50 edited novels under my belt, and my inbox is jammed with more to edit. I’m lucky today if I get the chance to read one book a month. But sometimes I just say to heck with it, and stop everything I’m doing to just relax and recharge with a good story . . . on my Kindle of course. lol

I feel fortunate to have the chance to pursue my creative endeavors. It helps that I have such a supportive husband, and I couldn’t do this without him. He’s my rock and, other than my mother, my biggest fan.

Mostly, I write romantic suspense. Although I dabble in contemporary here and there, and recently began writing under the pen name CiCi Cordelia with my BFF, Char Chaffin. We are currently working on a dragon shifter romance for Soul Mate, and have plans for a paranormal series that we plan to self-publish. So much fun!

My newest release is with Soul Mate Publishing, Between Midnight and Dawn . A romantic suspense with a serial killer plot. This story is a bit darker than my other novels. I wanted to write a truly nasty villain, and spent a few days researching serial killers. Probably my toughest research yet. Even now, some of what I read still haunts me.
Here’s a promotional trailer I put together that tells about my writing journey in little over a minute

Between Midnight and Dawn

Kyle Wade has spent over half his life seeking justice for his mother’s brutal murder at the hands of the serial killer known as C.H.K. His efforts lead him to Nicole Chambers, a woman he quickly develops strong feelings for. Now he’s torn between keeping Nicole safe, or using her as bait to capture the monster stalking her.
Cheryl does her own book trailers and I am awed by her skill.

 Excerpt:

Nicole paced nervously, waiting for Kyle to return. She’d thrown on her workout clothes; a black pair of Capris, a long purple T-shirt with large cut-out armholes, and a black sports bra peeking out from underneath. She was covered practically from head to foot, so why did she get so nervous thinking about Kyle seeing her in the outfit?
Because he’ll be touching me, that’s why. And though not as daring as what a lot of the women wore at the club, it still showed far more skin than Nicole was used to, except when she was working out. Did this qualify?
This is a bad idea.
Her doorbell rang.
She took a steadying breath. Too late to back out.
When she opened the door and Kyle saw her, his eyes lit with a smoldering fire. But all he said was, “Ready?” as he walked past her, greeting her dog, “Hey, Charlie.”
Taking a moment to close the door, and calm her jittery nerves, she turned back to him. The desire she’d so clearly recognized in his heated stare, had lessened to a more neutral expression.
He nodded toward the living room, where she’d pushed the furniture out of the way, clearing a large spot in the middle. “You should have waited for me to help.”
Nicole rolled her eyes. “Please. I do vacuum, you know. The furniture doesn’t move itself.”
A slightly crooked smile curved Kyle’s lips as Charlie headed over to his dog bed for a nap. “Suppose not.”
Her stomach fluttered. He was too charming for his own good. How in the hell was she supposed to resist him? No men rule, remember. Gah! What a dumb rule. What had she been thinking?
Maybe that your taste in men is crap, and you needed a good long break after the last guy you dated almost killed you.
Oh, yeah. That was it.
Kyle moved to the center of the room, looking all too fine in a pair of tight jeans. He waved her over with two crooked fingers. Her cheeks flamed, hoping he hadn’t caught her checking him out. But by the smirk on his face, she figured he had.
“Now,” he said as she approached, his tone shifting to all business. “If someone tries to grab you, whatcha gonna do?”
“Um. Run away?”
He nodded. “Might work. But, let’s say he manages to get a hold of you. What then?”
She licked her dry lips, nerves rolling around in her stomach. “Is this a trick question?”
The smile that split his face stole her breath. Gone was the serious tenant-slash-police officer from her backyard cottage. The man who stood before her now was a total, flat out, hands-down, no-question-about-it, hottie. His sex appeal exploded into the room like an atomic bomb filling up every nook and cranny.
And in just a minute or so, he was going to put his hands on her.
Ohmygod. Trouble. Seriously.
Maybe this really wasn’t such a good idea—
Nicole screamed when she was suddenly grabbed and her back brought up against Kyle’s chest. One arm clamped around her waist, the other across her throat.
Her natural instinct was to struggle, but he had one leg wrapped around her shins, totally immobilizing her. The heat from Kyle’s body burned her up, and she wasn’t unaware of the rising bulge against the small of her back. Excitement tickled through her.
Charlie let out a little bark, but only lazily watched them. She scowled at him. Some guard dog!
Mouth pressed against her ear, Kyle murmured in a seductive drawl, “If I were the bad guy, sweetheart, your pretty little ass would be mine right now.”
Sounds great. You can pick up Between Midnight and Dawn from Amazon for just 2.99 (Unless, of course, you are a Kindle member. Then it's free.) If Romantic Suspense is your read, click on over.

Authors, Editors and Books, Oh My! 2015 RWA Nationals

Posted by Susan B James on 3:30:00 AM with 15 comments
Everyone has a different conference journey. This is mine.
I am giving away goodies at the end of the post. Two Books and a Notebook.

I started my stint at RWA Nationals by Volunteering in the Goody Room, a room set aside for authors to promote themselves by offering free stuff to conference attendees. I met some lovely people dropping off wondrous things. From bookmarks and postcards through lip balms, flash drives, chocolate and books. One author, JS Scott, offered beautiful beach bags with sunscreen, a towel and a host of mini goodies. I was lucky enough to snag one of those.
Annette Bower, Cheryl Yeko, me, and Char Chaffin at Juniors.
If you have been to RWA Nationals, you know it’s a jam picked whirlwind of seminars, keynote speeches, conversations with your favorite authors and much more. Drop that event into the heart of Times Square and you have a kind of madness I only want to do once in a lifetime. But oh, what a lovely ride.
On Wednesday, the NY Public Library held an author reading in Bryant Park. The event, hosted by the dry and witty Joyce Lamb, USA Today’s Happily Ever After editor featured, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Robyn Carr, Kristan Higgins, Beverly Jenkins, Elizabeth Hoyt and Meredith Wilde. Imagine sitting outside in a beautiful park listening to three of your top favorite authors read!
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Robyn Carr, Beverly Jenkins, Kristan Higgins & Meredith Wilde
Plus, the new documentary film Love Between the Covers featured Beverly Jenkins and I was fascinated by her. I got to speak with Beverly and I bought two of her books. I also got to speak to SEP, Robyn and Kristan. I am a huge fan of all three.
Cheryl Yeko & Char Chaffin
Wednesday night I went to see On the Town with my editor, Cheryl Yeko and one of her best friends, Char Chaffin. Char is queen of the Purple Font Nag at Soul Mate Publishing. Getting to know these two was one of the highlight of Conference for me. Another was meeting my publisher, Debbie Gilbert. A truly charming gracious, human.
The main part of the conference began on Thursday. From breakfast buffet and 8:30 AM Keynote speech by Barbary Freethy to 4:15PM the action never stopped. (Note chandeliers. Did they put those up for RWA? So very suggestive.)

First thing you need to know about RWA is you can’t do it all. Heartrending choices have to be made.
I started with the PRO Retreat and a thirty minute session with Christy Craig on Rejecting Rejection (Christy has more than 10,000 rejections and is a NY Times best selling author with her YA Shadow Falls series. I just finished the first one, Born at Midnight. Loved it. I moved on to Laura Drake and Log Lines (dense thirty minutes full of great suggestions. Don’t use names. Use adjectives. i.e. a spunky marine biologist.)
Christine Ashworth

Maggie Marr, President LARA
I skipped my own beloved chapter mates, Maggie Marr Books into Film and Christina Ashworth, Pros and Cons of Small Publishers, figuring I would pick their brains at home. I repeat. You cannot do it all.

Next up – Horrible Choice time. Do I go hear a conversation with Nora Roberts or attend a craft lecture on research with Jude Deveraux? This choice was horrendous. I adore them both and have everything either one of them ever wrote on my Keeper Shelves. I compromised by dropping in for ten minutes of Nora (fabulous husky voice.) and on to Jude. Wonderful lecture. Her notebooks are amazing. (Note: Both Brenda Novak and RaeAnn Thayne mentioned Jude Deveraux's books as having started them on the road to Romance.)

45 minute Lunch break. (No you really can’t go anywhere in the Times Square area and be back in time for the 12:45 PM lecture. Get a coffee and a snack bar.)
Winnie Briggs, Michelle Grajkowski. and Tina James
12:45 Honing Your Pitch. Making the most of your appointment with Tina James (Harlequin Executive Editor), Winnie Griggs (author),and Michelle Grajkowski (Three Seas Literary Agency.) They emphasized high concept. Using the key points an agent or editor would have to use to sell the book. I didn’t take enough notes

2:00 Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Jayne Ann Krentz Ten Things We Learned the Hard Way. I wouldn’t have missed this for worlds. Two of my top favorite authors together in one room? Be still my heart.

3:15 Emotion The Heart of A Novel with Brenda Novak and RaeAnn Thayne. Thank god I have notes. I only wish I could read them.
Some of the Soulies on their way back from dinner.

Deep breath before going on to The Soul Mate Author dinner at Ellen’s Stardust Diner. Debbie treated all forty one of us to dinner. My only regret is so many authors to meet. So little time. I didn’t get to converse with nearly as many people as I would have liked.

Friday.
Keynote lecture was Julia Quinn another one of my keeper authors. Two of her books were at each place setting.

I started with Sarah MacLean’s  Mastering the Art of Great Conflict. RWA severely underestimated the probable attendance at this workshop. I was lucky to get a seat.Wonderful lecture. Must read her books!
Jennifer Crusie and happy me.
I could only attend one Jennifer Crusie lecture, Metaphor and Motif. Her second one was up against Kristan Higgins and my agent pitch. Fortunately Jen was gracious enough to put her notes for both workshops up on her blog ArghInk.

Another horrible choice:

Susan Elizabeth Phillips lecture on Writing Great Characters was up against a Chat with Robyn Carr. I went to Susan’s. Susan had some exercises for us including describe a character’s clothing in one paragraph and make your choices reveal important things about their character. I love this woman. Read the opening page of Heros Are My Weakness on Amazon for a great example.

I pitched to Jess Dallow of New Leaf Literary Agency. I chose her because hers was the only agency which also did mid grade and picture books. I think my pitch was good, but her response was she didn’t like romances with magic in them and I should pitch someone else. So that night I pitched it to Chery and Char that night. Cheryl said to send it. The delightful thing about Soul Mate Publishing is they don’t mind a little genre mixing.

Annette Bower, Linda O'Connor and me

That night I went to Sardi's with fellow Soul Mate authors Annette Bower and Linda O'Connor before seeing my favorite musical of the trip, Something Rotten.  Sardi's is an historic actor hangout and they have an actor's menu with lesser prices. I had my Actor's Equity card with me so we could use it.
This was a blip back in time for me. We often ate here between matinee and evening shows during the run of The Robber Bridegroom. When I was in college, my stepfather took me there and we sat next to Ross Hunter and Carol Channing. I eavesdropped unashamedly. He was telling her she had to do his movie, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Or they'd never let her play Dolly in the movie of Hello Dolly. Well, she did Thoroughly Modern Millie and they didn't let her play Dolly. Bad decision on their part.

By Saturday I was mind fogged with exhaustion. Attended some publisher open houses, chatted with some lovely people. My notes for Saturday are almost non existent. Conference ended with the awards presentation. I am so glad I went.  I gave out and received far few business cards than I'd hoped. There wasn't much time for chat. I only saw my own chapter mates in passing.

If you made it to the end of this post, I am giving away three gifts: Julia Quinn's When He Was Wicked,  Brenda Novak's This Heart of Mine, and a notebook from Melody Anne which has the complete conference schedule and lots of space to write. It's just the right size for a purse. Please leave a comment telling which one you would like if you win.
Which of you have been to a National Conference? What was your highlight?

Char Chaffin and Cheryl Yeko and Rodeo King

Posted by Susan B James on 2:30:00 AM with 12 comments
Love Cowboys?
So do Char Chaffin and Cheryl Yeko. They collaborated on Rodeo King, a warmhearted, sexy novella. And they plan to do it again. Here's the blurb, and then I will introduce you to dashing duo. Char Chaffin and Cheryl Yeko are, individually, multi published and award winning authors. They are also acquiring editors for Soul. Mate Publishing.

Rodeo King is book one in their Dustin Lovers series.
BLURB:  Caleb Johnson, 'King of the Rodeo,' is on his way to becoming Wyoming's National Champion. Until an ornery bull sidelines him with a potentially career-ending injury. Returning home to Dustin to recuperate puts him in the path of Rosemary Carmichael, the girl he deserted to become a rodeo star.
Now he's got to figure out what he really wants: returning to the rodeo circuit and going for that big, National prize, or convincing the woman he loves that he wants a life with her . . . and the son he never knew he had.

Cheryl and Char, where did you two first meet?

CHERYL:  I first met Char (virtually) working with her as editors for Soul Mate Publishing . . . Then the first year I went to Nationals we were roomies, along with our Power of Three BFF, Callie Hutton. I had known Callie virtually, as a crit partner, before either of us were signed by Soul Mate. Callie and Char were already virtual friends, and it was as if all three of us had known each other forever. Lifelong friendships were established.

CHAR:  We absolutely meshed instantly when we all first met in Atlanta! Up until then we kept in touch online as a threesome. Callie and I were amongst the first sixteen authors released with Soul Mate, and I had started critting for Callie as well, later editing two books in her very successful Oklahoma Lovers Series. Cheryl and I not only found a great deal of editing support when we first started comparing notes, but discovered we had a lot in common, too.

I find duo writing fascinating. How do you split the writing chores? Do you each take a go at the same chapter? Each take a chapter and then send it to the other for revision? Split the POV? It’s so seamless, I can’t tell. I know you also sent Rodeo King to your third Musketeer, Callie Hutton for an outside pair of eyes.
CHERYL:  We take turns writing a chapter, then it goes to the other for a critique. Then, they take over the story and write the next chapter. We do have a tentative outline to help guide us. Very tentative.

CHAR: Ha, can you tell Cheryl’s not about the outline? She’s a pantster and I’m the outline fiend. We ended up compromising, with me easing up on the whole outline-thing, and Cheryl trying her hand at structuring a bit more. What works the best is when we can either sit down face to face and pound it out together (which rarely happens!), or we can schedule a phone chat and get a great deal of it done that way. We talk on the phone almost every day. We do write seamlessly and we’re both proud of that. If a reader can tell who wrote what, then we haven’t done our job well enough!

It seems obvious that you share a love of the cowboy and rodeo life style. Where did that start for each of you? (I’m older than you, so I will confess I fell in love with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.) Your turns. Got a favorite cowboy hero in book, movies or real life? Or All three?

CHERYL:  I was raised on John Wayne movies.
I'm pretty sure there isn't a single one I've missed.

CHAR:  For me it was old Western TV shows. Gunsmoke, Alias Smith and Jones, The Big Valley, The Rifleman, Lancer. Newer western flicks such as Young Guns, Tombstone, and Silverado also got me into the western theme. I’m not big on country music so I can’t say it influenced me at all. But rodeos? Yep, I’ve been to a few. I have had to educate Cheryl a bit on western gear. Boot rands, bolo ties, Tony Lamas and Dingo, things like that. I sent her boot-scootin’ tunes to listen to as music does figure in our second in the series, Roping Her In. I may have changed her life forever. *grin*
You did an excellent job educating her. Great details.

CHAR and CHERYL:  We’re offering a three prizes: an eBook of Rodeo King and a giveaway on our solo books. Winners’ choice! Two drawings, and each winner gets to choose one of Cheryl’s e-releases and one of Char's.
Go ahead. Hit those links and look at all the wonderful books they's written. Then enter below.
a Rafflecopter giveaway
Thank you so much for being here, Char and Cheryl. Their personal links are below the Rafflecopter thingy. Your chance to know them better. Happy Reading to you until we meet again.
