Beta readers anyone?

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 3 comments
If you're looking to be one, I want to meet you.

Authors.
You’ve honed your manuscript. Been through the revision process more than once. You’ve possibly been through a critique group. (I personally love feedback from my critique group.) Now it’s time to look for a beta reader or three.
A Beta reader is a person who test drives your book. Unlike a critique group which gives feedback in small bites, a beta reader reads the whole thing.
The term beta is derived from the software industry where beta versions of a program are sent to users to test.
I am sure we’ve all been through beta versions of software. With the best will in the world the software industry has put out some real doozies in the first version. They didn’t put in bugs on purpose They thought they had a saleable finished product.

As writers, we too are capable of being blind to errors. Why?
We know our work too well.
We describe events or a world in a way that is clear to us, but not clear to an outside reader.
We’ve lived with the characters so long, some of what is clear to us about our characters did not make it onto the printed page.
They are plot holes we fail to catch.

A beta reader reads a finished manuscript and tells the author about the bugs so the author can improve its readability, and saleability. Ideally, a beta reader finds your glitches. I think an author needs at least three readers, because they may pick up on different things.

For Time and Forever, I had five, including one beta reader who gave me a line edit. That was above and beyond the call of duty. She improved my book immeasurably.
Hey, maybe the manuscript doesn't have any bugs. I have not personally experienced this, but it can happen. An author I did not know who was a member of one of my Yahoo groups posted a YA novel for "last looks." I adored it. I was fully caught up in her world and characters. I ended up sending her a fan letter. Wouldn’t it be nice to get that from a reader before it’s sent to an editor?
What do you want from your beta reader? Here is a great link to beta leader questionnaire: http://beta-readers.deviantart.com/art/My-Beta-Readers-Questionnaire-152568362

Where to find your beta reader?
It goes without saying that we all want the crème de la crème of betas. I know it takes time and trials to find a good fit.
You want one who regularly reads in your genre.
It’s best if they are not related to you. I find my friends are perhaps kinder than they should be because they love me.
If you belong to a writing chapter, you can possible arrange a beta swap. Check their listserv.
Sometimes you get lucky. I met a beta reader in an airport waiting for a delayed flight. We swapped manuscripts and I just finished another revision based on her amazingly helpful feedback.
You can search the web – Key word beta reader.
Yahoo groups You could search Yahoo Groups or start a new topic within your group.
Goodreads: I found, among others, a YA group. https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/129339-aspiring-ya-novelists

And a general Beta group where you post your genre. https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/50920-beta-reader-group
Facebook. Search beta readers followed by your genre. I see some people looking to find beta readers. Perhaps a swap could be arranged.
Next I tried Twitter. Lots of hits with beta reader. Found this wonderful blog. https://thebetareaderblog.wordpress.com/

I need a beta or two myself.
Kate's Hero is a romantic comedy. Approximately 207 pages.
One four leaf clover. Two stubborn People. A leprechaun with a mission. What could possibly go wrong?
Any takers?
If you are an author I'd be happy to swap. Leave a comment with a way to reach you.

Thanks you for stopping by.
This week's giveaway is one of the books I wish I'd written. This Heart of Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips.  It's a well thumbed paperback. (I have two.)

Meet Rebecca Neely. Romance with a punch of suspense #Giveaway

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 6 comments
Thanks for being here, Rebecca. Please tell us a little about yourself.
I wear many hats, including mother, freelance writer, storyteller. problem solver, doer and head bottle washer. I’m a sucker for a happy ending, and I write the kind of stories I love to read—those featuring authentic, edgy and vulnerable characters, smack dab in the middle of action that explodes from page one. My bio also reports that I was raised on a down home blend of Johnny Cash, Jack London, Sherlock Holmes, the Steelers, and all things small town. I feel blessed to have grown up in a close knit, fun loving and artistic family. My mother, a voracious reader and scratch cook, and my father, an entrepreneur, English teacher and lover of literature, taught my brother and I to work hard, aim for the stars, and live life.

I love firsts, so tell me about the moment when a publisher told you they wanted to publish your book.

It was almost like an out of body experience. You work so hard on telling your story, send it out, and somebody you don’t know loves your work so much they want to share it with the world. It was pretty amazing! My teenaged daughter was the first one to know. She couldn’t wait to tell all of her friends. That alone was pretty cool – street cred with my teenager – it doesn’t get much better than that!
No. It doesn't!

Other than your own, who are your favorite (heroes/heroines/writers) in your genre?
I’ve read Nora Roberts for the last fifteen years, and many of her heroes are near and dear to my heart, but perhaps none more than Cameron Quinn from the Chesapeake Bay series. He’s a hothead, sexy as hell, and endears me every time I re-read the book. I love the way he cares for Seth, the little boy who comes to live with them. I'll have to re-read that one. I think I own every Nora Book.
A close second is from an oldie but a goodie, The Eyes of Darkness by Dean Koontz. The hero is Elliott Stryker, a former operative. He’s strong, confident, sexy and intelligent, and he falls hard for the heroine, Tina.

What is the most exciting moment, so far, in your writing career?
I think when I received an email from my editor saying she wanted to buy my Crossing Realms urban fantasy series. This is my first series, and I hadn’t even written the second or third books. I was sitting in a department store, outside of a dressing room, while my daughter tried on clothes. I started crying I was so excited. It still humbles and amazes me. Awesome!

What is your favorite pastime, other than writing?
I enjoy reading, of course! But I also enjoy attending concerts – I love the energy and connecting with the musicians when they perform, live. I love hanging out with my daughter and watching movies, and shopping. I’m also really into The Blacklist right now, and I’m getting caught up on all the past episodes (binge watching on Netflix!)

How do you motivate yourself when inspiration takes a vacation?
I walk almost every day, and the physical exercise, as well as being outside and getting fresh air, helps me to work out plot problems. I also like to go to JoAnn Fabrics, a fabric, sewing and craft store. I enjoy seeing and feeling the fabrics, the colors, the textures, as well as all the cool craft supplies. It gets my creative juices flowing. I'll have to try that.

Any advice for new writers just starting out?
Read authors you admire. Write stories you would want to read. Read Techniques of the Selling Writer by Dwight Swain. Then read it another ten times, at least. It completely changed the way I think about writing, and how I plan and execute a story.

What genre or genres do you write?

I write romance mixed with suspense. My current release, A Mighty Good Man, is straight up romantic suspense. It’s a fast paced gritty tale.
'Hank' Jerry - This down and out writer and tough talking twentieth century broad is desperate to reclaim her personal and professional life.
Jack 'Gent' Darcy - This strange blend of gentleman and hood is fresh out of prison with a story to tell that could get them both killed.
Forced to return to the small town and the aunt she left behind, 'Hank' is doing her own time. But when Jack lands on Hank's doorstep, injured and on the run, he makes her a proposition she can't refuse: write his story about life inside one of the most powerful gangs in the country. It's simple - she'll get her career groove back, and he'll bury the gang, then disappear - his version of freedom.

Only problem is, they can't help falling for each other, and they've both got something to hide that could blow up in their faces. With time running out and gang enforcers closing in, will the trust they've forged survive the ultimate test?
I have this book on my Kindle waiting for me. It's got 25 reviews, 84% of them 5 star. I'm looking forward to it.
The series I’m working on right now is an urban fantasy with paranormal elements, and of course, romance. I remember reading an interview with Stephenie Myers, and, don’t quote me on this, but she talked about the best stories being those that crossed or blurred genres. I love that concept. Certainly, I’m not comparing myself to Ms. Myers, but I totally agree. My stories live in my imagination where there are no boundaries, and I do think that often, the best stories contain elements from all over the board. I agree 100%!!!

Tell us about your latest release.
The first book in the Crossing Realms series, The Keeper, is due to be released in late April 2016 from Soul Mate Publishing. To get a sneak peek, click here: http://eepurl.com/bqiDi5 What’s the story about? Here you go J

Nick Geary, jaded clan leader of human guardians, the Keepers, is doomed to love a human woman who’s forgotten him, time after time, for thirteen years: Libby Klink, a skittish accountant who’s as terrified of her recent and strange intuitions as she is of her mundane existence.

When Nick is ordered by the clan’s guiding force to seek Libby’s help in defending the clan against enemy Betrayers, romance sizzles as the pair forms an unlikely alliance in their desperate search to discover the key to the clan’s salvation—which Libby alone holds.

But a haunting secret could cost Nick everything, and in a race against time, both will be forced to choose between their hearts and duty. Can their love, and the clan survive, or will the very forces that drew them together ultimately destroy them?
I am beyond intrigued.

What’s your current WIP?
My current project is the second book in the Crossing Realms series, entitled The Watcher. I can’t really say too much about that right now, but I invite you to stay tuned!

And finally, where can we find you?
Thanks for being here, Rebecca. This being the gifting season, I am offering an eBook copy of  A Mighty Good Man to one lucky commenter. Leave Rebecca and me some love. Share what you want for Christmas. (World peace doesn't count. We all want that.) Happy Reading.

The Doctor is In. Paranormal author L. D. Rose

Posted by Susan B James on 2:30:00 AM with 6 comments

Meet the amazing L.D. Rose. Linda is a neurotic physician by day, crazed writer by night, and all around wannabe superhero. (I plan to follow up on that.) Linda, please tell us a little about yourself.
First off, thanks so much for having me on your blog, Susan! I’m a doctor by day (resident-in-training at a major academic center in New England) and I write PNR/UF/horror by night. ;) I’m married to my soulmate and we have a crazy boxer and two adorable cats. No kids, I don’t have time for that. :P I’m also a coffee addict and I love red wine (on the weekends, of course). I’ve been writing for as long as I remember and I’ll write until I’m dead. I’m also an avid reader when I don’t have my nose in the textbooks.

Wanna be Superhero huh? I cannot resist this. Who's your favorite Superhero. (You bear a striking resemblance to Wonder Woman)
Oh, stop! *blush* You’re the only person who’s told me that, Susan. (Only in my wildest dreams.) I love Batman. Always have. He’s dark, brooding, and he doesn’t have superpowers. Of course, he’s a billionaire (which is a superpower in itself) but I like that he has a good heart when there’s so much horror around him. I tend to model my heroes that way, and his character has a special place in my heart. Not to mention the villains! Best villains in any comic book series ever.

If you could invent your own, what would your Superhero look like? What would be her powers?
Oh wow, what a question! So many to choose from! I’ve always loved dark red hair, so she’d have an inverted crimson bob and very dark eyes (too many idolize pale eyes when I think dark eyes are just as sexy and mysterious). Telekinesis is my favorite superpower (probably ‘cause I’m lazy sometimes, haha) so I’d go with that. Black tights, black shitkickers and a black t-shirt that reads “BORED” in red on it! Kind of punk rock/goth with dark make-up and pale lips. Yeah.
Perfect. I want someone to write her!  I wish I could think of a good name that wasn’t already taken.

I love firsts, so tell me about the moment when a publisher told you they wanted to publish your book.
I actually received my first contract offer in an email and I stared it at for a good five minutes, stunned. I couldn’t believe it! Then I ran upstairs to tell my hubby, leaping on him and squealing, “I have an offer!” I’d attempted the agent route initially, then decided to trek out on my own. I signed my debut novel, RELEASING THE DEMONS, with Soul Mate Publishing last November (right around Thanksgiving—I was sure thankful for that!).

If it isn’t too nosy. How about the first time you kissed your true love?
My hubby and I went out to dinner for our first date and it was the first time I’d tried sushi. I was terrified of hating it and disappointing him, LOL, and of course he was highly entertained by my discomfort. I had a wonderful time, though, and we took a long walk on the beach afterwards, just talking and getting to know each other (I also ran a skunk over with my car completely by accident but we won’t get into that…). I actually kissed him first—you got to go for what you want! ;) It was sexy and sweet and I still remember the lingering smile on his face. I was totally crushing on him (and I still am!).

What is the most exciting moment, so far, in your writing career?
Publishing my first novel is definitely my all time high so far. There’s nothing like having your book out there in the world after putting so much time, love and effort into it.

What is your favorite pastime, other than writing?
I love road biking and running (when I can.) I’m also a foodie (sort of—I just really like food!), so I enjoy trying out new restaurants when the budget allows.
So all girls' motorcycle gang, huh? Jem and the Holograms on wheels or someone else?
Road biking? I read somewhere you used to belong to an all girls motorbike group. I picture it as Jem and the Holograms on wheels?

Haha, Jem! That’s awesome! I haven’t thought about that show in a very long time. ;) I think an all-girl motorcycle gang would be kickass. Can you imagine Jax Teller from SONS OF ANARCHY as an old lady? Hell yeah, I can! Besides, female cyclists are way more badass than males.

How do you motivate yourself when inspiration takes a vacation?
This is going to sound totally cliche, but I’ve never had this problem. It might because my writing time is so limited, but when I finally get a good chunk of time to write, the words just pour out of me. Music and art also fuel my creativity and I surround myself with it (I constantly have a favorite playlist going and my husband is a commercial photographer, so it’s unavoidable ;)). I already have two other series planned besides the one I’m working on (The Senary series, which will end up as seven books in total). My head is just full of stories I’m dying to get out, but alas, I have to take things one day at a time. :)

Any advice for new writers just starting out?
Write what you love. Don’t write for the market, cause it’ll show in your work. It’s easy to tell when an author is passionate about what they’re writing just by small nuances in their stories. And as a reader, I’m more invested and engaged if there’s some fire behind the words. As for promo, just be yourself, interact with your readers and fellow writers as much as you can, and don’t forget to write the next book!

What genre or genres do you write?
Paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and horror. Horror is actually my first love. ;) I’ve been told I should write medical suspense, but I’m so bombarded with medicine on a daily basis I can’t even fathom writing about it in my spare time.

Tell us about Releasing the Demons
RELEASING THE DEMONS is about reaping vengeance and falling in love at the most unlikely of times. Although many of the scenes throughout the story were difficult to write, they are real, raw and brutal, plopping you firmly into a dark world where nothing but love is sacred (whether that love is between friends, brothers or lovers). The action is nonstop, keeping you questioning how far the heroine, Valerie, and the hero, Blaze, will go in order to stay together in a world where fate is desperately trying to tear them apart.

Blurb
Blaze Knight has been through hell and back, but the nightmares aren't over yet.

Five years after Blaze was maimed by Cyrus Chimola, a powerful vampire with a penchant for torture, he’s still trying to pick up the pieces of his shattered life. As a genetically engineered mercenary with the ability to bend fire to his will and to see in infrared, Blaze’s mission is to protect what’s left of humanity. When Chimola and his crew return to the Bronx gunning for Blaze’s blood, Blaze is forced to face the demons of his past. Hell-bent on revenge, he seeks the help of Valerie Medeiros, an NYPD detective who manages to steal his heart and save his life in more ways than one.

Motivated by her sister’s gruesome death, Valerie has made it her life’s goal to bury every vampire in the ground where they belong. When she brings in Blaze Knight for suspected murder, she discovers he’s not only innocent, he isn't a man at all—he's a half-vampire hybrid working with a band of brothers for the U.S. military. Valerie has a hard time trusting anything with fangs, yet she quickly falls headlong into Blaze’s life, a life full of darkness and horror she can’t even begin to fathom. The bodies are stacking up, but Valerie can’t seem to let go of this hybrid, a beautiful monster filled with pain, rage, and passion unlike anything she's ever known.

In a world where the line between good and evil is blurred, Blaze and Valerie will find danger at every turn, risking everything they’ve come to know and love, including one another.

What’s your current WIP?
I recently finished the second book in The Order of the Senary series, BLACK BULLET, and it’s currently undergoing revision. The third book in the series, BEAUTIFUL LIAR, is half-written. BLACK BULLET is darker than RtD, and involves the hero experiencing possession, recurrent nightmares, and fighting off the demon inside him, all while trying to save an alcoholic empath on a suicide mission to kill a monster who emotionally and physically ruined her. BEAUTIFUL LIAR takes a more erotic turn and involves the hero ending up physically and emotionally addicted to the heroine, whom he can’t have (at least not without damaging the relationships with those he loves most). I just really heart these books and I can’t wait to share them!

And finally, where can we find  you?
I’m always thrilled to meet new people, so here’s my barrage of social media links. :D

Anne B. Cole Sweet Paranormal Time Travel.

Posted by Susan B James on 3:00:00 AM with 7 comments
Meet the delightful genre-blending Anne B Cole who manages to combine teaching, parenting and writing and still stay sane,
I read Anne’s first book, Souls Entwined in May, 2014. Here’s my review: I've never read a book like this one. I received a copy of Souls Entwined in return for a fair review. Two contemporary people, Sam and Gretta are sent back to entwine with the bodies of a kidnapped sailor, Lorenzo and a young Greek woman, Anya to solve the mystery of a generations old curse. Their adventure is a race against time to prevent Gretta from becoming the curse's next victim. Snapping back and forth between past and present, Sam and Gretta feel a growing commitment to each other. I look forward to reading the next installment in this adventure. A remarkable debut by Anne B. Cole.

This year Anne and I were both Finalists in the RONE Awards for best time travel. Neither of us won, but we were both thrilled with the honor.
Yes, congratulations Susan for getting into finals!  It was such an honor to be nominated for the RONE. The winning and runner up authors in our category are simply amazing writers with over 30 titles published between the two of them.

Anne lives in Indiana with her husband and three teenage children. She teaches preschool and makes time to run so she can eat ice cream and doughnuts.
Some people ask me how I get everything done in my crammed days. I admit that I rarely watch television (unless it is football season) and I multi task---right now I’m writing this interview, doing two loads of laundry, and baking an apple pie.

I love firsts, so tell me about the moment when a publisher told you they wanted to publish your book.
In 2013, my critique partner submitted a pitch of my book in a ‘pitch your mate’ blog contest. She had already submitted her own pitch in the part of the contest where you submit your own work. We both made it through the qualifying round and to the editors’ round. Soul Mate Publishing offered a contract on my first novel, Souls Entwined through this contest. I admit…without my critique partners I’d have never become published. When my publisher sent an email to me accepting my book for contract I remember saying, “Oh my God!”…about ten times in a row. My family surrounded me with questions like, “What happened?” and “Who died?” It was a life changing moment because I went from dabbling in a hobby of writing to becoming a novelist.

If it isn’t too nosy. How about the first time you kissed your true love?
My true love is my husband of 23 years. We started dating in high school when I was 16 and we dated for over seven years before we married. Our first kiss was in his parent’s car after we went out and played miniature golf with a group of friends. It was the perfect ending to a teenage date--- simple, sweet, and the beginning of a love that will last a lifetime. A beautiful first. Thank you.

Other than your own, who are your favorite (heroes/heroines/writers) in your genre?
Diana Gabaldon’s books are amazing. As for heroes and heroines---gotta side with Percy Jackson and Annabeth. My son and I love to read Rick Riordan.

What is the most exciting moment, so far, in your writing career?
Giving credit to my kids and husband for their support and ideas for my writing was special. When I started to write the acknowledgements for Souls Estranged I realized the book would not have been possible without them.

What is your favorite pastime, other than writing?
That’s easy…I run because I love to bake and cook! Nothing is better than running five miles in order to justify eating a slice of homemade apple pie. Both leave me feeling awesome.

Got a recipe you want to share? Most certainly! Souls Estranged has many moments where characters converse over yummy foods. In the story, Gretta enjoys a plate of loaded baked potato chips with a new friend. In real life, my family and I enjoy eating at a local diner called Jersey Café. They have the most wonderful loaded chips. I’ve duplicated the recipe at home, but if you are ever in the Indianapolis area you must go to Jersey’s and order a plate of their chips!

Loaded baked potato chips

One 12 oz. bag of kettle style potato chips
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Your favorite BBQ sauce
6 to 8 strips of thick cut bacon, cooked and crumbled
Chopped green onions (optional)
Ranch dressing (on the side to dip)

Place the chips on a jelly roll pan and cover with cheese. (add more or less cheese if desired). Drizzle with BBQ sauce. Toss on the crumbled bacon---again, add more or less as desired.
Bake in oven at 400 degrees for 5 to 7 minutes or until cheese is melted.
Serve with ranch dressing.

That looks truly sinful!

Any advice for new writers just starting out?
Write every day. (Every word you pen will make you a better writer. Blogs, notes, emails, and of course your work in progress counts.)
Read every day. I learn something about writing every time I read.

What genre or genres do you write?
I like to bend my genres. I enjoy combining supernatural suspense, time travel, and sweet romance with a touch of magical realism.

Tell us about Souls Estranged.
"She fled to save him from the curse. Now she must flee to save
herself."
SUMMARY
Back from their adventures in Souls Entwined, Sam Daggett begins a new relationship with Gretta Dobbs, whose memories of their time traveling experience have been erased. Determined to never leave her again, Sam vows to help Gretta, despite the bad luck curse on her heirloom ring. Within hours of their return, tragedy strikes. As Sam becomes the third victim of the bad luck curse, Gretta’s memories of her time spent in the past begin to return. Unable to remember more than snippets, she realizes that anyone close to her is in grave danger. In order to keep Sam and her family safe, she flees in the middle of the night. Finding the perfect summer job in the back hills of Virginia, Gretta unknowingly crosses paths with a serial killer. With guidance from their ancestral spirits, Roxana and Katarina, Sam desperately attempts to find Gretta before the curse strikes again.

Excerpt From Souls Estranged.

Excerpt from Chapter Four

“Lunch is almost ready. Here’s a list of Sam’s pre-surgery instructions.” Ruby handed the paper to Gretta. “Tim and I both have to work tomorrow so you’ll need to keep him in line.”
Sam heard the two discussing the dos and don’ts prior to his operation, yet his mind registered one thing.
     Alone time with Gretta.
Gretta scrutinized the list. “What about this one?”
     “Never mind,” Ruby chortled.
Gretta walked over to the kitchen and opened a drawer. Finding it empty, she smiled at Ruby. “I could have cleaned the drawers.”
“What did you say?” Ruby lifted a square of gooey lasagna from the pan.
“You crossed ‘clean drawers’ off my list.” Gretta pointed to the paper.
     “No, no dear. I meant—”
“Ruby?” Sam wasn’t sure how he knew what she was going to say, but he definitely didn’t want her to continue.
“I crossed it off, Sam. After I caught you two on the couch, I wrote a list for Tim. He will make certain you have on clean—”
     “Ruby!”
“Oh, hush yourself and eat.” She handed them two heaping plates.
Gretta and Sam slid into the chairs at the table. He dug into the steaming layers of pasta, cheese, and sausage. After a minute of silence, Gretta’s grin caught his eye.
     “Batman or Spiderman?”
Sam laughed before answering, “Hanes. Plain, white Hanes.” He peered sideways to Ruby and lowered his voice. “Fifteen years ago, Spiderman.”
Gretta smirked, forking a hunk of pasta dripping with cheese. “Spiderman?”
“Spiderman. What about you? Cinderella or Snow White?” He watched her savor her food.
She wiped cheese and sauce off her lips with one finger and licked it clean. “Cinderella.”

What’s your current WIP?
I’m currently writing the third and final book of The Souls Trilogy, Souls Endure. Here’s the hook---‘Without faith, love may not exist. Without love, evil takes control.’ This book is verbally contracted and about 75% written…I have so much to say about it….but you’ll have to wait.

And finally, where can we find  you?

Angela Scavone's here with a military romance and a gift card giveaway

Posted by Susan B James on 3:30:00 AM with 6 comments

Meet contemporary romance author Angela Scavone.  Her second book is A Journey Home Reviews call it heartwarming and relevant.
Angela, Tell us a bit about yourself.
I live in Ontario, Canada sharing my home with my father and my two much-loved pups (and one evil cat).  I currently work for the Board of Education behind the scenes supporting and analyzing student data. In my spare time, apart from my avid love of storytelling, I like to read, spend time with family and friends and concoct dairy free recipes from scratch. Sometimes I win. Sometimes I lose.– tofu, banana and peanut butter pudding – I am looking at you.
Don’t share that recipe. Please.

I love firsts, so tell me about the moment when a publisher told you they wanted to publish your book.
It was a surreal moment. I was completely overjoyed with the fact that someone wanted to publish something I had written. Words cannot describe the moment fully J
Angela's  first Soul Mate Publishing release was Love by the Book in 2011. The blurb on Amazon sounds hilarious.
Other than your own, who are your favorite (heroes/heroines/writers) in your genre?
There are so many to choose from, I don’t think I could pick just one J

What is the most exciting moment, so far, in your writing career?
Being published not once but twice, nothing else is more exciting J

How do you motivate yourself when inspiration takes a vacation?
To motivate the muses, I like to read other genres of books, and I read a ton of author blogs. Their progress and excitement in their WIPs helps get me motivated.

Got a recipe you want to share?

I have both lactose and gluten intolerances so I try to make meals that are both easy to do and gentle on my stomach. The one thing I love is pizza! But that has two ingredients I cannot eat. I finally found a way to have pizza without any pain.

Gluten and Lactose Free Pizza:
1 lb ground beef or chicken (personally I love ground chicken)
1/2 cup pizza sauce
2 cups shredded lactose free cheese
Pepperoni
Favourite toppings
 Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Brown the ground beef or chicken in a pan, drain
Put meat in a mixing bowl and mix with 1 cup of shredded lactose free cheese
Spread the meat mixture into a circle on a pizza pan (or stone) and top with tomato sauce
Add Toppings and the rest of the lactose free cheese.
Bake for 25 minutes or until cheese is melted.
Voila! Gluten and Lactose free pizza!! YUM!
I have to try this!

Any advice for new writers just starting out?
Write, don’t think about it and don’t think about whether or not someone will want to read/publish it. Just write and don’t think about it J That is what the editing process is for.

Tell us about A Journey Home
Stephanie Tyler’s sole job is to fly overseas to war torn areas of the world to retrieve and escort the bodies of fallen soldiers back home to the United States. It is a tough and emotional job but she is honored for the privilege. Her duty also helps her to escape her past and her failed marriage

But those flights have become increasingly more dangerous and she is forced to have a partner accompany her. Much to Stephanie’s surprise and dismay, she is partnered up with her ex-husband, Captain “D.A.” Douglas Aston.

From the moment Captain D.A. enters the scene, he irritates her. It could have something to do with the fact he slept with her best friend while they were married. As they go on several missions together, Stephanie is forced to be courteous and professional with D.A. even though the very sight of him irritates her beyond comprehension.

Then, Stephanie’s cheating, husband stealing, ex-best friend is killed in Afghanistan and Stephanie and D.A. must escort her body home. While executing this difficult duty, a myriad of conflicting emotions makes Stephanie ponder how short life really is . . . and to question her own ability to forgive.

Excerpt:

The phone intercom buzzed and Pam came over the speaker. “Sorry to interrupt, Colonel, but you wanted me to let you know when Captain Aston was here.”
I stared at the Colonel wide-eyed.
He merely smiled and said, “Thanks, Pam. I’ll be out in a minute.”
“He’s here now?” I asked, incredulously.
“Didn’t I mention that?” He rose from his chair and walked to the door as I stood and straightened my uniform.
The Colonel stood with his hand on the doorknob, watching me fuss. “You look tremendous, Captain.”
“What? Oh I don’t care what I look like for him,” I immediately protested, waving my hand in the air.
“Of course.” He was still smiling as he opened the door. “Captain Aston, please come in.”
I heard his voice first. “Thank you, Colonel.”
I glanced down at my uniform to make sure everything was in place before he came into the room. When I looked back up, Captain Aston was walking through the door.
To the female eye, he was a very attractive man. He stood at six-four and was well built, but not so much that muscles and tendons were popping out everywhere. He had a strong jaw and black hair just long enough to run your fingers through. Dressed in full uniform, his handsome features were even more prominent.
Not that I noticed.
“Please come in and we can discuss your new role.”
“Yes, Sir.” Captain DA put out his hand for me to shake, flashing his killer smile that started in his bright blue eyes and ended in a set of mouth-framing dimples. “Good to see you again, Captain.”
I returned his smile and handshake, determined to be professional in front of the Colonel even if it killed me.
Colonel Madison resumed his place behind his desk. “Please sit. This is a quick, informal meeting to get reacquainted with each other.”
I remained on my feet which kept both men standing. “Sir, with all due respect,” I began, facing the Colonel, “I cannot work with Captain Aston.” Apparently, my mouth wasn’t on board with being professional.
“Why not?” DA asked, sounding offended.
I ignored his question and kept my attention on the Colonel, who looked as if he were about to laugh. “We used to be married.”
“I know that.” He smiled.
“Our marriage did not end on a positive note,” I continued, “and I don’t think I can work with him on a day to day basis. In fact, I left Virginia to get away from him.”
“You know, I’m standing right here,” DA chimed in.
“Captain Tyler, are you telling me you can’t put your differences aside to work together as a team? Even though I asked you as a personal favor?” The Colonel’s smile had vanished and there was now a warning in his tone.
“No, Sir.” I heard the warning and decided it was time to back off the fight. “I’ll try putting our differences aside to work together, but I can’t promise I won’t kill him in the process.”
The Colonel coughed out a chuckle. “That’s all I can ask for. Now, you—hopefully—have some time off before another call comes in. Why don’t you show Captain DA around?”

The Colonel spoke as I reached for the door handle. “I’m curious, off the record, of course. How did your marriage not continue on a positive note? I remember the wedding. You two seemed so compatible and so in love. What happened?”
DA and I looked at each other for the first time since his arrival.
“He cheated on me with a friend of mine,” I replied baldly.
“I did not cheat on you! How many times do I have to say it before you believe me?” he retorted, all vestiges of professionalism gone.
“Oh, here we go again!” I shouted back. “I came home early, I walked into the kitchen and there was Alex on top of you on the kitchen floor.”
“I told you it wasn’t what it looked like. I have said over and over again that I did not sleep with Alex!” His tone increased until he was shouting, too.
“You’re telling me that you two never slept together?” I demanded an answer.
“Well . . .” He looked away from me. “Not while we were married.”
“I knew it!”
“It was after we were separated and you had moved here! What did you want me to do? Never sleep with anyone again?”
“You can sleep with whomever or whatever you want for all I care—”
“Ahem.” The Colonel cut in. I jerked back, startled; in the heat of arguing with my frustrating ex, I had forgotten my boss was there.
“Sorry, Sir. Do you see why I can’t work with him?”
The Colonel regarded us both. “Alex?” he questioned DA.
“Alexandra Keating, Sir. She was Stephanie’s best friend.”
“Best friend, my left toe! She’s a traitorous, backstabbing, two-faced, lying, husband stealing bitch.”
“Wow, that’s quite descriptive, Captain. Why don’t you tell us your true feelings about her?” Both of the Colonel’s eyebrows rose in shock.
“I’m only speaking the truth, Sir.” I addressed the Colonel but glared at DA.
“Well.” He clapped his hands together to signal the end of our bickering. “I know you two can be respectful when escorting a fallen soldier home and I know you will be professional during the dignified transfer ceremonies. However, please try and be professional at other times as well or at least civil to each other.” He waved us toward the door.
DA and I both nodded and exited the office. Before we could leave the reception area, the Colonel poked his head out of his office door.
“And, Captain Tyler-”
“Sir?”
“Try not to kill him, please. He just arrived at our base and it wouldn’t look good in the press.”
Knowing the Colonel had a wicked sense of humor, I still couldn’t find my own jocularity. “No promises, Sir, But I’ll give it my best shot.”
“That’s all I ask.”

And finally, where can we find  you?
